Tablet vs. computer. There's a big difference in what they can do - are you sure it doesn't matter what you end up with?
__________________
The word "there" can appear as a pronoun, as in “over there".

"Their" is a possessive pronoun. In a phrase like “Susan and Bill's car,” it could be used to to make a new phrase: “their car.”

”They're” is a contraction of “they are.”
“They are” should always be able to replace “they're.”

Extra credit: It's "I'm looking for an M3" not "I'm looking for a M3".

You need a computer, period.

Budget? Expectations? I'm sure you can find an old PC locally via Craiglist for almost nothing.

EDIT: if you're in Turpin, OK, eBay might be a better source.

An Ipad will be nice to take to class because you can put your text book on there, take notes, etc. However switching b/w the too will be hard and studying might be a bit harder.

A laptop is a bit bulky but it can do a lot more and will be better for most of your classes. In all honesty you probably won't take your laptop to many of your classes but rather the library to study.

Plus depending on your major your department/university may have certain requirements such as Windows or iOS devices (IE pre-med, engineering, etc).

Honestly, go to walmart during the back to school sale and pick up a laptop that comes free with an Xbox (hopefully the new XBOX one that was shown off today) and you should be fine.

An Ipad/tablet is more of a luxury that won't really do anything that well for you. Stick with a smart phone and a regular laptop and you'll be good to go. Plus what the hell are you going to do when one of your friends sits on your ipad or spills something on it! There goes all your notes and stuff until apple can repair it for a lot of $$$. A laptop you can bring to your university help desk and get fixed within the same day.

We have had pc's in the past, got a Mac book last year. Love it.

Going to start my MBA in the fall. Plan on getting another MacBook.

Only problem I've had: depending upon what kind of classes you have the schools tend to use 'blackboard' for you to interface w class, check grades, schedules and turn in assignments. I've had problems w this on my Mac, but the fix is to download and use Firefox and not use your safari browser.

What is the budget for your new computer? ...that may also impact your choice in machine.

I thought I actually misspelled it at first - typed that on my iPad first thing in the morning when I was still groggy.

Still trying to figure out how someone could get the functionality they need for college out of an iPad. I even have a keyboard for mine and it's still a PITA. I keep it as a toy of convenience, basically. But a useful tool? Not much, IMO.

(Ducking for cover waiting for the inevitable fanboy attack. )

Mac's are much better when it comes to your typical college student. They are pretty easy and straightforward to use for most students and they last a long time. Most students will use their computers for facebook, typing documents, playing online games and browsing the web. Anything else really like encoding videos, graphic design, etc are for more "advanced" users of computers, which most college students aren't. One student in one of my classes has had the same macbook pro since he was a freshman in college and now he's in his second year of grad school! Of course he takes care of it and isn't rough with it, but it's gone to his classes daily for almost 4 years and has kept on working pretty well.

The issue though is that even though they do last a long time and are easy to use, you really won't need all of the features and stuff that it provides at such a high price! You will be fine using a 400-900 dollar windows laptop and you get an Xbox to play on in your downtime if you don't have one already. Even if the laptop breaks in 2 years you can buy another one and still have spent much less than on a mac, plus you get another free xbox that you can sell to get some of your money back!

What is with all of this Xbox talk, do they come w pc's now?

I use my Mac book for everything.... Power pts, browsing, writing reports, I have a Citrix 'app' for work. (Do not have Facebook, no gaming either). I love this thing, it's a sturdy machine that has yet to freeze or get a virus. By no means am I saying its perfect, but I can't envision going back to pc.

I've guest lectured at business schools and pretty much all you can see in front of you is a sea of illuminated Apple logos staring right back at you....

A Mac Book seems almost de rigueur at college these days.

I finished my senior year with my Surface Pro. I'm an English major, so I typed pages and pages on this thing. I'm Chemistry minor, and have pages and pages of notes on it. But sorry, not selling it!

I am in the process to get laptop for my daughter. University requires Windows 7 and OFF2010 minimum.

By my experience I am considering paying more to get a 13-14" display. I have my own laptop with a 15.4" display and I feel that it is a bit cumbersome to carry. Looking for an Asus, Acer ot Toshiba.
