Alpine White or Carbon Black 550i M-Sport?

I know this is a subjective question....I have been anal about cars from day one. I have owned multiple white cars and love the classic look...On the flip side, it's hard to beat a black BMW. I test drove a Jet Black 550i with Dinan stage 3 chip and exhaust......man, what a car. Now, my delima is color...I actually havent seen a CB in the flesh but will see one tomorrow...I believe it's similar to Jerez Black from the M3 side of the house. As far as maintenance of the paint goes, will I have any issue keeping this clean compared to an AW 550? It will be garage kept, fwiw. Thanks.

Have owned several black and several white cars of various makes. This was back when I was working, so the cars spent time outside quite often.

Black was a high-maintenance chore.

In the end, white would be my personal choice from now on (as it is with my present BMW). What makes it easier to choose is the 115-degree summers here, so not even black interiors any more, mine is tan.

I have a carbon black 550 and I wax it monthly with 35% tint and it looks sweet. I love white too. But, you nailed it, nothing like black on a bmw..I own two large cans of meguiars paste wax...the good stuff and I wax monthly.....sometimes twice....more upkeep.

Looks amazing when its spotless.

White is my preference with M-sport. The light color accentuates the diffuser and trims better. My boss has a black replica of my car and is always rueing the fact he did not go light.

He has a point....and I agree at times I find myself saying the same thing. I will be trading up for a 14 in a year or so and will most likely go white. But black is so sharp.....

Being from the New England area, there was a day when I hated white because it always looked dull and dirty around here with the exception of a 3-3.5 months per year when the weather was nice and the street are clean. However, I have grown to really like the BMW (and Audi) bright whites and the m-sport 5 does look really nice in Alpine White. However, Carbon Black is really unique. It's really a dark dark blue. It is different and stands out. Although I am not a white hater anymore, I'm still not there on pulling the trigger. You are going to love CB.

Yes, you are right, It is a dark dark blue....but appears black in the sun. I was at a gas station at night and under the lights at the gas station it is blue and black during the days.....I dont regret CB. White has all of a sudden become mainstream on all the 50K plus cars.....

Carbon Black is more blue then black. It is jet black with lots of fine blue metallic flake. I love the color and would make the same decision if I had to do it all over again. However, I have to admit this color is harder to keep clean more then jet black. It amplifies dust, pollen, and dirt. Therefore, this certainly isn't the low maintenance choice.

I used to think the same way about maintenance and color choice. Always getting silver and gray cars. However, when a dark color is clean it really stands out. I look at it this way, there nothing like having your car dirty and running it through the wash on a Saturday and feeling like it's brand new. My DG really cleans up well, but definitely can show dust and pollen really easy. Doesn't bother me anymore. It looks too good when clean.

I agree with you, but to offer a reason as to why I feel the M Sport Package almost seems tailor made and especially cool for a black F10, is that if you tint the windows, it's almost as if BMW has gone close to just thematically "blacking it out" for you with its black exhaust tips, shadowline, etc. all give a very "blacked out look". Then you have the diffuser which isn't black, but a grey, so a black BMW is perhaps the only car on the road to still benefit from some contrast from the diffuser, which right there separates it from most black cars with blended in diffusers.

What I especially love about a black F10 is that it's a color that makes the subtle chrome trims look especially tasteful, including the chrome grilles. When you see it shaded and at a distance it gives it a very cool low profile look while the chrome bits stand out just right:

All valid points. At the end of the day we are fortunate to drive such fantastic cars

Very true. I love how each package can really accentuate multiple colors in different ways (i.e black and black and chrome contrast or white and black contrast, etc.). I like to think that this is all by design and purposeful.

It really depends on how OCD you are with your paint. Any color can be washed and look clean but for me that isn't enough. Knowing / seeing paint swirls drives me insane so after every wash i at least have to throw on a coat of quick detailer or wax. For some people just a simple car wash the car looks perfect while others that same car will require 10 hours of paint correction. Everyone's expectation is different.

CB is a very nice color but I would never be able to live with it. I would be stressed out trying to keep it perfect all the time.

Alan

AW all the way

Owned Sapphire Black Metallic on a previous 5 - nice when clean (but lasted 38mins) but so does white cleaned up. I think the white 'pops' better esp with the msport

IMO, if you're going to get any kind of black, just get the Jet Black. It is the most striking and intimidating color on an F10. While most will disagree with me, CB is blue and you will always see the blue in it and wish it was black.

To answer you question, I'd go with White because it displays the beautifully done contrasting trims on the car. Another light color that does that well is the Space gray but it also look washed out sometimes.

I would say Carbon Black but then again I am biased I have received more complements on this color than any other car I have owned. Most people assume it's black and then as they approach they realize it's a dark blue - the changing nature of the color in different lighting I think is pretty cool.

It certainly shows the dust out here in AZ but compared to Jet Black it handles the dust and looks "cleaner" a couple days after a wash. I was going to order Silver but I have no regrets with Carbon Black even out here in the desert - great looking color!

I'm really torn...I saw both in person yesterday and love both. The CB almost looks meaner...not that I am after a mean look or anything. The Cinnamon interior with CB would look great, I'd bet.

I would get CB because of the blue, not because I think it's black.

In that case, the imperial blue metallic is more stunning as a blue car than the CB.

I like the CB because it's still black with blue undertones....to me, it looks like it would be less maintenance than Jet Black...probably not by much, though.
