Nope, key has to be bought from the dealer. There have been conflicting reports on this though. I have heard that for a regular key gotten from dealer, the programming will be done by the car. Just put it in the slot and the car does it.

Has to be bought from dealer. Key can only be programmed to a car once and you can't get non-programmed keys besides from the dealer. Local dealer wanted ~$200 for one here

Spare key

There is no reasonable cheap way out of this. Suck it up and go to the dealer

And like I always remind everyone else when this comes up ..... Do not buy a used BMW from a dealer without having both keys in your hand and tested before you drive away. CA keys are even worse and can only be programmed with the car present. This is important to know because the used car doods don't know this and promise to order the key and mail it to you.

I have purchased three of these used and none I them in my own state. I know all the key problems!

My car came with only one key fob and I have CA. The seller (independent dealer) later agreed to supply a second key through a BMW dealer which was mailed to me. I only had to insert this key into the ignition slot and all was good. I paid dealer cost, less 50% = $175.

Does that mean you could have put the key in any E60 and it work?

No. The key is unique to the VIN and getting one issued would require proof of ownership of that particular vehicle.
