Anyone cross shop the 5GT and A7?

The A7 is much less expensive and not as restrictive color-wise. But the A7 has no option for DHP. Did anyone else cross shop with the A7? What did you conclude?

If you carry more than one passenger, the A7 may not be for you. The GT IS bigger, and higher, which makes it easier for many to get into, and fit their luggage, too. The 2014 has a bigger trunk as well, making that distinction more distinct. FWIW, the dual-action trunk is nice in the middle of the winter or on a rainy day if you need something back there and there are passengers. If going for the 6-cylinder...a straight six is smoother, too.

Thanks. With the 2014 packaging, I can't get the GT I want and the next best configuration is still more $$ than 2013. Love the new back end though ... so I'm looking at others.

The A7 trunk is 24.5cf on paper vs 17-18 on the new GT but either is fine with me. The GT's design for the hatch cover is great.

Is the A7 noticably lower? The seat height you get by subtracting headspace from overall height is only one inch lower than the GT. I won't waste time on a test drive if it's actually a low seat car. The GT was marginal in my book.

I haven't had a straight 6 since my 1965 Lemans. How is a straight six is smoother than a V6? Audi's V6 has slightly more BHP and NM. Any other ways the N55 is better?

+1

We looked at the A7 just before it hit the dealerships. Back seat room was a high priority for us. I'm 6'1" 200 and I fit in the back of the A7 with a just an inch to spare for headroom and knee room. No chance to stretch my legs even a little. With the GT, you can adjust the rear seat back and forth a little, so I had much more room. Perfect for a long trip when one of us is in the back seat with the kid (and her huge, 5 point harness car seat.). Personally, I think the A7 looks better on the outside, but in reality would not have met our needs as well.

Wife and I both the the inline 6 is smooth, but does not feel tremendously powerful. It's a heavy car compared to the other BMWs that use the same engine. Wife drives her 99% of the time, and finds that the acceleration response and "oomph" is perfect in sport mode. I generally leave her in regular and just push the gas a touch more. The GT is no slouch by any means, but wife's previous car was an 06 750LI with the V8 (360 hp vs 300 in the GT) and mine is a 335 with Dinan chip (380 hp), so by comparison the GT does feel more sedate. Definitely test drive the 535GT and the 550GT and see what feels better for you. Fuel efficiency was on our list (below size, comfort, options, etc), and that's why we chose the 535 over the 550 GT. I don't know what gas mileage would have been in the 550, but the wife averages 19.1 mpg. mostly city driving, sport mode. In her 7 (which we traded in hoping to get a car like the 7, but with better mpg), she got 18.9 . . . ha!! (we did a long highway trip, set cruise at 78, and I average 28 mpg over several hundred miles. So I tried explaining to the wife that her 19.1 mpg was due to her driving style. she didn't quite agree!!)

overall, we love our GT, especially the wife. for her, it was the extra options -- sport package seat that "hugs" her, rear entertainment for kid, etc. plus it handles like a (big) BMW!

Back seat room in gt much better but at expense of cargo area. A7 cargo area with all seats up is much deeper

Does the A7 have a noticably lower seating position? MOre of a sit on the floor vs sit on a chair?

Maybe I was on crack the day the wife and I drove the Audi A7. The steering to me felt very much over assisted, no matter if on interstate or driving around a parking lot. Not enough road feel for me. I'm 6'1" about 240 and my head was just about brushing the headliner in the back seat. Of course our 9 yr old daughter sealed the deal for the BMW when she asked of the A7, "Daddy, why dont these rear seats adjust?" We went back to the BMW dealer and again drove the 2 yr old demo with 10k miles, game over for A7. IMO I much preferred how the 535GT felt on some back roads.

I don't see that way at all. A Prestige equipped A7 MSRP is substantially lower than an equivalent 5GT as well as the base price of a 6 gran coupe. Plus the 6 only has a trunk, no hatch.

We shopped the A7 and 550GT. The lower price was very attractive on the A7 and for our needs it handled well. Having said that the extra room in the GT was a major plus. The simple center console on the GT as well .. a big plus. The A7 center console was way too complex and cluttered, IMO, to be usable while driving without looking at it. We're still waiting the arrival of our GT, been in Brunswick, GA for over a week .. hopefully this week it will be in our garage

I test drove the A7 today and found it to be a nice car. I could raise the seat higher than I could on the 5GT. At 5'11", there was less than an inch head clearance in the rear seat. I did like how it handled and it comes standard with many of the things that are options on the 5GT such as Drive Select (aka DHP). I liked the car. One nice thing at the dealership was that it used RFID on the cars it sells and when you roll onto the lot for service, your name and service items are displayed on a large screen in the service drive through area.

I went straight to the large BMW here where I was told that they can't do anything for a 2014 5GT ... probably until next year .... LOL

I cross shopped both but ended up purchasing the GT because Audi wasn't budging on the price! Their finance/lease terms were also meh!
