Post Photo Comparison: 2014 BMW X5 F15 vs. E70 X5

The 2014 BMW X5 has finally been revealed and is scheduled to start production in August 2013 in Spartanburg, SC for the gasoline versions and December 2013 for the diesel variant. In order to get a better idea as to the differences between the F15 and E70, we put together a series of comparison photos for you.

Front View

2014 BMW X5 F15 vs. 2011 BMW X5 E70 Front View

BMW has given the X5 a very modern and eye-catching front end design with the new X5. You will notice right away the kidney grille reaching outwards to meet the headlights as has been seen in other recent model updates including the 3 Series. The new headlight rings have been flattened along the bottom edge and are trimmed with signature LED accent rings. The new front bumper appears along with the three dimensional design of the kidney grille provides a more sporty and aggressive look.

Side View

2014 BMW X5 F15 vs. 2011 BMW X5 E70 Side View

The familiar BMW swage line appears more connected to the overall design of the X5 running from the headlights, through the door pulls and into the tail lights. The addition of the Air Breathers on the side profile is coupled with both a character line starting at the top of the Air Breather and a bottom crease line that connects and integrates the latest design element through to the rear of the X5.

Front 3/4 View

2014 BMW X5 F15 vs. 2011 BMW X5 E70 3/4 View

This view of the cars gives you another perspective to see how well the front elements work with the side elements to produce a very appealing overall design. The design of the X5 flows very smoothly from the forward tip of the kindney grille all the way to the start of the tail lights.

Rear View

2014 BMW X5 F15 vs. 2011 BMW X5 E70 Rear View

The most obvious difference in the rear of the X5 are the upgraded tailights. The thin, three-dimensional LED light strips of the two-section, L-shaped rear lights create a striking night-time look. The other new feature is the addition of "Aero Blades" which are air-channeling elements contiguous with the roof spoiler to optimize the car's aerodynamic properties.

Interior

2014 BMW X5 F15 vs. 2011 BMW X5 E70 Interior View

The interior design of the X5 has been updated with a large 10.2 inch display monistor similar to other newer BMW models. Other interesting additions include the use of BMW's black panel technology for the climate control and ventilation systems.

Wow, I love the interior, I absolutely hate the exterior. The back looks like a bloated X3, and the front is way too busy, the pieces just don't seem to tie together. Also, once again there doesn't seem to be an integrated system for towing, I hope that cutting the bumper will no longer be necessary. With the decrease in Torque/HP in the diesel, BMW seems to be leaving that market to the Porsche diesel with its 7700 lb tow capacity

I'm glad I've decided to get the current '13 X5D. Other than the updated interior, MEH...
BTW, is it just me or does anyone else think the '14 X5 resembles of the current Infiniti FX which is a complete failure, compared to the original design?

The interior is much improved; however, I'm not loving the exterior--too X3, CRV-ish. Perhaps it will look better with 20"s...

I wish I had the same attraction to this as I do the all-new RR Sport, but being a BMW fanboy, I imagine this may grow on me--maybe?

OT--Audi, just bring over the RS4 avant and I'll replace my X5d in a heartbeat

That front has a 60's Pontiac look, long, wide, flat

I went with the x5 3.5d because of the motor. Otherwise It would have
been a Range Rover Sport. That V8 was nice but heard it used the fuel

Seeing them side by side from the rear, the E70 looks like it's wearing hipster and the F15 like it's wearing sweat pants pulled up to the arm pits or someone pulled a wedgy on it.

I'm not blown away but, not horrified either. The interior is a big step forward and I'm very happy to see it doesn't have the stupid cut line straight across the front of the hood most BMWs have now. The kidney grills are getting to be a bit obnoxious. I'll be interested to see what the final dimensions are. The E70 barely fits in my garage and if they add another inch or two in length I'm going to have to get creative with my parking arrangements.

Do I actually see door lock buttons near the respective door handles? It looks like they are keeping the central locking button too.

Reminds me of the E46 to E90 transition.

Alan, amazing comparison, thanks for that. It helps a lot that the cars you used are the same colour. Different colours make OP's comparo a bit more difficult to read.

Nice comparison. The new model looks too busy, especially from front and back. I like the side view. I'm glad I didn't wait for the '14.

Is it me or are those fog-lights placed horribly? I hate where BMW put them.

I'm arguably biased, but I think it is kind of jacked up looking. Hopefully, they fix it for the LCI refresh around the time I will be looking for something new.

I'm going to have to see this one in person. My biggest concern is the "pop up" style GPS screen. I'm not too fond of that on the current 3. Again, I'll wait and see it live.

Love the interior.

What I've gotten from those pictures is that the E70 STILL looks modern!

I really like the new look. It look more aggressive and sturdier. The interior is the best in the Bussiness. I will get one beginning of the year. Im waiting for 35d version. I cant wait and thanks for the wonderful comparison.
