Another one of those relability threads...or talk me into a mini

Hi all! I am considering to change a car and the mini is on my top 5, but the image of them not being so reliable is kinda off-putting for me. First of, I know the mantra "it's a money pit but it has personality"-I had two v-dubs Now my current car is a 06 civic which is about to reach 80k and it was not as mythically trouble free as the stories about hondas go. I had replaced the clutch master cylinder, transmission input shaft bearing, front brake rotors. Overall, with the 30k and 60k services and excluding oil changes this car cost me about $5000 in repairs/maintenance so far. Yikes. So, if I pick up a used mini (preferably an 07+ manual s) with 20k~30k on the odometer and keep it until it hits 80k-100k, can I expect it to cost less or at most as much as my civic? It would be interesting to hear the opinion of mini owners who drove over 100k miles.

Just for fun, here are the other cars I am thinking about***********:
Fiat 500 Abarth-same, questionable reliability, but as a Russian-American I love the fact that it looks like a Zaporozhets(google it lol)
Honda CRZ-I actually LIKE it, but the hybrid battery issues seem iffy. And I hate that they don't give out the HOV stickers for these.
Hyundai Veloster Turbo-seems like hyundai stepped their game up, but driving it was a little bit meh.
Mazda 3 Skyactiv-seems to be the most reasonable but it is marginally too big for me. Also, the sunroof is not available on stickshift.

My wife and I have owned 5 MINIs, The only problem we ever had was the check engine light coming on once for a missed ignition. Was fixed within half an hour at the dealership. Never spent a cent on any repairs or oil changes. Marvelous warranty and maintenence. Already planning to get the wife another one in a year or two.

I'm only at 6700 miles in since June 10. No issues or complaints. Would not hesitate to buy another (or second one).
However Used is Used. You will inherit wear and tear and the unknown with a used car. That goes for any used ride.
Have the car inspected before you buy it. You'll know what you are in for.

Have to say I'm fancying an ALL4 auto gasser cooper s...test drove an auto yesterday but not the power house road burner version.

Recent converts to auto and need a 4x4 that isn't 2 foot off the ground and sounds like a Massey Ferguson.

I was looking at a Mini very, very hard but ultimately decided against it due to reliability concerns.

You need to research North American Motoring forum and decide for yourself.

There are problems, and then there are problems.....(like powertrain stuff).

The Mini S had real engine (timing chain, oil pressure / tensioner) problems which caused a LOT of grief over hte past couple of years.

I guess I can tolerate window switches, electronics, etc...but powertrain should be solid....

I currently have a leased 2012 VW GTI with 18k that has been flawless (leased because was worried about reliability).

I'm considering a Cooper S but either a 2012 or new model. Frankly, I want a newer model with the new "stuff" and of course they would come with a certified warranty or factory warranty. Personally, I will only buy from a Mini dealer because I would prefer to have a dealer maintain and certify the car versus not knowing the history or having any warranty when buying from a private party. Make sure you run a car fax on any used car and spend a buck and have the dealer do an inspection on the car before you buy it. It may help.

A car is just that, a car. I have been in the automotive business for 10 years now. I started off my career washing cars at age 14 and I'm 25 now and would consider myself to be well established in the industry. I've worked with many type of manufactures those who were ranked #1 in terms of reliability and those who rank poorly. I can honestly tell you the vehicles itself are not the problem, it is and always will be the service provided and the maintenance that are applied by both the owner and dealer.

I am currently employed at BMW/MINI but I drive a 1999 Toyota 4runner and refuse to let go of it until it completely shuts down and is rendered useless. I purchased the vehicle in 2000 with 7,000 KMs on it and is now registered over 300,000 KMs but it still runs like new and is surprisingly quiet and smooth. This is because the vehicle was my pride, and something I knew I truly wanted to own at the time and want to own for as long as it can last. I do my regular maintenance and am pretty good in detecting when something seems a little off with my vehicle, therefore; addressing concerns before it becomes an issue and creates problems for my vehicle. Everybody that has seen, taken a ride, or even drove my 4runner will say that thing is the smoothest and cleanest looking 300,000 + KM vehicle they have seen in a very long time. On our used car lots and some of my fellow co-workers vehicles, which is pretty much a variety of all makes and models, I've seen units that hasn't even hit 100,000 KM yet and the suspensions feel rough, the engine is making weird clicking and cranking noise, and the axles are starting to squeek and they all have one thing in common. The vehicles were neglected

With that being said, when you are in the market to purchase a car, make sure it's something you would be proud of owning, something that puts a smile on your face when you wash it. When you own your vehicle only you drive it as often as you do and should be able to tell when something feels off and get it checked before it becomes a problem and creates a big bill when repairs are needed. I can honestly say with confidence that EVERY make and model is a good model. But not every make and model is going to be right for you. If you take care of it and do your maintenance your vehicle will last whether its a Ford Focus, a Toyota Camry, a Mercedes GLK or even a BMW 328i, it will treat you good. As for manufacturer defects, this is when it is important to have those warranty provided and to make sure the company takes responsibility if there's any thing off with the the vehicles workmanship. A vehicle is built with over 20,000 parts so even if a manufacture claims that there's a 0.5% chance in encountering an error, that is still 100 parts that could possibly go wrong.

I have seen many vehicles registered over 500,000 kms and run like it still has another 500,000 km to go before it dies. They come from all different makes and models equipped with all sort of engine technologies. But one thing they all have in common is a proud and responsible owner.

So if a MINI is what you want, I say go get it. But remember you drive the car the most so opinions are just that opinions. If something goes wrong with your car you have no one but yourself to blame. If it is a used car, well make sure you do your research. One of a dealerships due diligence is to provide all information on vehicle history and service record before you sign the bill of sale. Some just hide and give you the old " just trust me, I'm a reasonable man/woman " exchange and there you are signing the Bill of Sale not knowing on the back of the contract it states on one of the lines " when signing this bill of sale, it states that all history and service records have been shown to you by the seller ". Customers are so focused on negotiating the price and looking at the numbers in the front that they forget the bill of sale has 2 sides to it. Actually how many car owners on here actually knows what the back of the bill of sale says? Or even asked to look at it before they sign it? Better yet, how many of your car salesman reviewed that terms and conditions with you before they let you sign the bill of sale?

Totally agree with longevity and reliability...Nothing beats servicing regularly and not leaving dodgy garages near one's cars.

I've got a 12 year old Volvo s60 with 90,000m which runs great and only needs maintenance on the usual things that wear out on any car. It's not for sale.

Service regularly with the best of oil etc.
