Can't get my top back up!!

My automatic top worked great until today. Now it won't move, either automatically or manually. The red ring in the trunk doesn't move at all. I can't pull the top up by hand. The motor whirs softly to unlock the mechanism but the motor that lifts/lowers the top doesn't make a sound.

Supposedly, this motor was replaced a month ago (I bought the car from Hilton Head BMW, and that is what they told me).

What do I do??

The first thing you do is a search. Your entire post has already been covered before.
Since that will not happen, I have a couple of questions.

What posistion is the top in when you tried this (failure)? Up or down.

If the top (closed) is up, then have you checked the microswitch? See 'search' above.

If the top is down (open), and the top does not move, then read on.

When you pull the manual release ring in the trunk, does the ring move a tiny amount or not at all? It should move only no more than a 1/4" (inch), if that. If it does not move at all, then most likely, the electro/hydraulic motor is bad and Hilton Head BMW LIEDů.

The reason I say the motor is bad is water corrosion kills the motor and also can corrode the Bowden cable so it will not move. Sort of like an indicator that the motor is bad....

Have you checked the fuses?

Emergency closing / emergency opening
In the event of failure of electrical and/or hydraulic functions, the top can be opened and closed using emergency unlocking/locking systems.
Emergency closing:
In the luggage compartment on the left-hand side below the convertible top compartment floor, pull out the plastic ring attached to a Bowden cable as far as it will go.
With a 90-degree turn, lock the plastic handle in this position.

In the hydraulic unit, a short circuit is enabled, making it possible to open and close the folding top by hand.
Pull the handle of the Bowden cable in the rear panel of the luggage compartment.

The interlock in the convertible top compartment is released.
Move the top forwards by hand until it reaches the cowl panel.
Take the Allen key from the on-board toolkit.
Remove the plastic panel from the front roof brace.
Insert the Allen key in the uncovered internal hexagon.
Lock and unlock the cowl panel lock by turning the Allen key.
Take out and replace the Allen key.

Emergency opening:
Perform steps 1 and 2 as well as 5 to 7 from 'Emergency closing'.
Unlock and open the cowl panel lock by turning the Allen key.
Take out and replace the Allen key.
Move the top backwards until it reaches the convertible top compartment

Top still down

The ring doesn't pull out at all. I had absolutely no problems with the motor until it just stopped working.

When I press the button to close it, you hear the soft whir of the motor for a few seconds but then it stops. Under normal conditions, you would hear that soft sound of the motor for a few seconds and then the sound would change and the top would go up.

I haven't checked any fuses.

You have not really answered my questions, but I am going to assume from the last post that the top is down (open) so that rules out the rear microswitch.

When you attempt to pull the ring, and place the cable portion into the groove (see Emergency closing / emergency opening above), can you then manually raise the top?

Check the fuses again.

No luck

No, I can't move it. Neither the ring nor the top budges. I called Hilton Head BMW and they are going to fix it on Thursday.
