The 5 is bigger, if that's important. If you can wait to drive each, that would be ideal. You may not need bigger. Keep in mind, the 5GT is made on the 7-series chassis, so has more upscale parts bin to choose from, and it does cost more. Pour over the standard and optional features, and see if there's anything missing in one you really want.

I'm waiting for the 335 GT to arrive in the States. If impressed, I may make a return as a Bimmer owner.

What is a return and how does it work?

535 GT vs. 335 GT

I think he means that he was a former owner of a Beemer and, if he likes the 335 GT, he might become one again.

I think you just need to decide: Are you a 3-series or 5-series guy? IMHO, the 3 is a small car, something I drove when I was starting out. Whenever I see it on the road, I think of an Accord but with a better grill. The 5 series has presence. The GT even more so.

All that said, the 3GT does not have (to name a few):
The rear seat partition between the seats and trunk
Dual action trunk/liftgate
As high a semi command seating height
A flat exit out the trunk (there is a 5" lip)
ARS in the DHP
Auto leveling air suspension
Integral Active Steering
Rear Sunshades
Night Vision
Ceramic Controls
Ventilated Seats
Active Front Seats
Soft Close Doors
Active ventilation
Multicontour Seats
B&O Sound System
Full LED lights
Rear wheel drive option
As good a steering feel
In-dash storage drawer

The 5GT does not have:
______ wheel vents
As low a price tag

Ernest, a great compare-and-contrast of the two GTs. Thanks.

Awww shucks.... I felt the "Smiles per Mile" factor was too intangible to list.

only question will be if they drop in a 3GTM that can out handle the gt550, and gets the true M upgrades....

I love my GT but it is a big car...to date my favorite bmw..inclusive of my M roadster...but i did mod my GT

I like both GT's and have looked at them extensively. Ernesthouse's comparison is quite funny and I'm sure it's intended to be.

To make it a serious comparison you would need to add the advantages of the lighter, nimbler 3GT (quicker, much better fuel economy, better handling, while having similar trunk space, etc.)

But the point is, with all similarity in name and form, these cars are not in the same class. If you want a car that is larger and more luxurious than a 5 series, you will need to get the 5GT. It's an awesome and highly underrated tourer. If you need the functionality of having 5 doors and adequate rear leg room, but want a more sporty car with a less luxurious interior and fewer options, and a lower price tag, the 3GT will be your choice.

Regarding presence on the road, I never considered buying a 3 series for that reason (and for not having enough space), even though the F30 has grown up considerably compared to previous models. But in my opinion the 3GT with the right options has a road presence that comes close to the 5 series and it will not nearly be as ubiquitous as the 3. I even think the GTs would have deserved a designation number above 3 and 5 if these weren't reserved by BMW for the coupe's.
