Reliability of 640i x Gran Coupe

Considering a 640xi gran coupe as an everyday commuter; 20k/year, would like to hold it for 6-8 years. What is the likely reliability, particularly in the later years?

I can't comment on the 6 series but my 5's have been very reliable.

just my opinion, BMWs in general are reliable until your original warranty runs out~

Reliability of 640i x Gran Coupe

I'm 1.5 years into a '12 650 doing 25K miles a year. I had injector issues early on but have found this car to be very reliable. I am keeping it a few more years so I did get the extended warranty, given its the first MY for this version of the car.

I'm not getting a warm fuzzy that this can be reliable driven to 200k over 10 years.......or even 160k over 8.

I wouldn't trust it, it all depends on what you think is reasonable for repairs on the car. You could skip the adaptive suspension/DDC as those will likely have issues as the car gets older, but no one has any info. The previous gen 7 series may be a starting point as a lot of the tech is an upgraded carry over from that car. I'd cruise those boards to see what type of issues they are having. Also people are having intake build up issues on these direct injection motors, check the N54 335i forum or search walnut blasting.

I don't have any personal experience since I just got my first BMW, but if Consumer Reports is to be believed, none of the German brands are particularly reliable. Add in all the high-tech gadgets and there's a lot to go wrong with cars like these. I don't think reliability is usually the primary factor in the purchase of a car like this.

Whew thats a lot of mileage, I thought me doing 16-17k/yr was enough that I got a "commuter" car just for my 50mi round trips to work...

The turbos will probably give out way after your warranty runs out. It's a twin turboed I6, right?

What did you get as your 'commuter' car?
(I've been thinking the same strategy; however, I am in the NE, so I would need AWD as a commuter). That, and if I went with 2 cars, I'd likely get a Cayman S as the weekend car. The 640xi Gran Coupe would be my 1 car strategy, but I think the mileage is too high. Another possibility is a 535d. Brand new re:reliability, but less $$ than the Gran Coupe and great fuel economy. I also have an A3 TDI I love; just not great for winter commuting here.
