BMW's ASS Mea Culpa

Yes, that would be an improvement for sure!

I find it interesting how things get stated as facts, and are repeated as such, when they apparently have no basis in reality. It has been stated here as fact that BMW has only added ASS to US spec cars to do better in CAFE testing. Everything I've read on the subject states that the current US testing cycle (unlike the European one) does not reward ASS because it does not include idle time. Just for example:

http://green.autoblog.com/2011/05/09...e-mpg-problem/

http://www.caranddriver.com/features...ined-tech-dept

So, there must be a different reason, yes?

I am looking forward to having ASS but not for fuel economy or emmissions reasons. I am an outside sales rep, so my car is my office. The idea that the vehicle will shut down while I'm on the side of the road making calls and answering email; and start up when the battery needs more juice, or more heat/cooling is sweet.

I agree. It's a feature. You can decide when to use it and when not. If I had to choose to have it on all the time or do without it, I'd skip it. As it is, you can turn it on and off, and also control it in a number of other ways. It's fine.

Didn't read the whole thread because I wanted to skip the climate change debate so I apologize if this point has already been made, but to the OP, I've found that if you switch to ECO Pro before ASS kicks in, the engine stays off longer.

Thanks. I tried ECO PRO a couple of times but it literally scared me. It's been a long time (more than 20 years) since I drove a car with such poor performance. So that's not really an option for me, at least in city/suburbs driving where ASS would be most useful.

I know what you mean. I switch into it just before I stop if I'm anticipating a long light. PITA, but it does work. And I think it will have a more significant effect when the weather gets hotter and switching ratchets down the A/C.

OK, I see what you mean. I'll try that. Thanks.

I also think that switching to Eco Pro while the car is auto-stopped (as opposed to while you are rolling to a stop) may prolong the auto-stop period.

Cars start rich. Increasing the number of starts is hardly emissions efficient.

When the motor is cold they do, but when already warmed up? I notice that my Boxster disables the system until the water temp is at least 150oF.

Actually when CAFE was initially passed in 1975, Obama was only fourteen years old, he was born in 1961.

Yes. Additionally, once warm, cars no longer start rich.

Someone is going to get hurt when the false-stall occurs.

So you continue to claim, over and over, ad nauseam.

Yet - despite the years of use here and elsewhere in the world - there is not a single report such has occurred, not even anecdotal, in a BMW or the many other cars that have the same feature. Has there been a massive ASS cover up conspiracy?

If an unintended stall killed, there would not be any MT drivers left on the planet.

It's happened. It's just classified.

Be careful out there.

Fuel savings my ASS

No recorded incidents in Europe either and we've had it for the last 5 years.

Perhaps it is in the dessert where the moon landings are filmed.

More directly on point, have their been any more stalling issues after the software update some months ago? I don't recall any more complaints, but may have missed them.

Is there any evidence suggesting the f30 uses a traditional starter motor? Has anyone taken it out of the car and apart to see what's inside?

All I know is that my wife told me she almost had a heart attack when the damn ASS misbehaved or led her to miss-use the system and came close to being broadsided.

After that she refused to drive the car until I had the thing recoded.

Of course, if my wife have had a heart attack, the accident would've been classified as "medical".

Even after the re-coding, took my wife a while to completely trust the car and trust herself driving the car.
