Post 4 Series (F32) vs. 3 Series (E92) Photo Comparison

We have quickly put together some photo comparisons of the 4 Series vs. the 3 Series for your viewing pleasure. Depending on the angle that you look at the new 4 Series in, changes can subtle or dramatic. The new BMW 4 Series Coupe is visibly larger in width and wheelbase than the outgoing BMW 3 Series Coupe, and its stretched silhouette sits considerably lower to the road.

Click on the photos to see the full size versions

Front Profile

The car's striking front end with its characteristic BMW design features, such as the doublekidney grille, four round headlights and a large air intake in the front apron is keen to display its family ties with the BMW 3 Series.

4 Series vs 3 Series

Side Profile

The side profile of the car stands out clearly from the outgoing E92 3 Series with the new "Air Breathers" making a bold statement in the design. These Air Breathers are positioned rearwards of the front wheel arches to reduce drag and increase efficiency. Below the windows, the double swage line made up of two character lines running alongside each other familiar from the BMW 3 Series along with the door sill line strengthen the body's wedge shape.

4 Series vs 3 Series

Rear Profile

The subtly sloping roofline creates a smooth transition into the rear, and accentuates the sporty profile of the flanks. The L-shaped taillights of the 4 Series Coupe fit in with BMW's newer design elements in their cars and continue the path of the swage line from the flanks, creating a link to the rear end.

4 Series vs 3 Series

Technical Drawings

** Note: Sizes listed are in millimeters and need to be converted to inches **

4 Series vs 3 Series

The new BMW 4 Series Coupe will be offered as both a 428i, featuring BMW's awardwinning TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and as a 435i with the multi-award winning Twin Power Turbo 3.0-liter inline six. Both will be available with a standard 8-speed sport
automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Both will also be offered with a choice of rearwheel drive or with optional xDrive, BMW's intelligent all-wheel drive system. The 2014 BMW 428i Coupe will have a base MSRP of $41,425, and the 2014 BMW 435i Coupe will
have a starting price of $46,925. Both prices include destination and handling. The 2014 428i xDrive Coupe and 435i xDrive will start from $43,425 and 48,925 respectively, again inclusive of destination and handling. All four variants of the BMW 4 Series Coupe will arrive in US showrooms late this summer.

It's hard to like the higher beltline and smaller windows of the F32.

It makes me a bit sad given that my 2007 E92 is now going to look a little dated. I was planning on holding on to my E92 for a while though

I like them both, but I think the E92 looks sleeker and more elegant.

The F32 fixed the trunk and rear window line of the E92... never liked those, even in my M3.

I don't think it is necessarily hard to like for me, but it certainly does seem to make the F32 look bigger and heavier even though it weighs less.

F32 is more masculine and less milquetoast.

Yes, that's the part that bugged me most about the E92 as well.

From the front it looks like the F30. Not good.

Looks great from the side/back though.

It looks quite a bit like an F30 from the side too. Although better.

One thing I don't like about the F32 is the whole rear window portion. It's too long, therefore giving it away as "not a true Coupe" and more "2 door version of what's inherently a 4-door car". In that regard it starts to remind me of the most hideous and low-rent/cheap looking car to come out of Stuttgart to U.S roads: The new C-Coupe, with its gargantuously ungainly rear quarter windows (of course it's further ruined by the hideous singular fat door frame as well, reminds me of a Pontiac Sunfire meeting an Accord Coupe), and overall unsexy character.

Also I'm not crazy about the angular little Hofmeister Kink, as smoothly transitioned large rounded Kinks are all BMW.

Other than that I really like it but am kind of let down. Way too much F30 for a "4 Series", and the rear being an F30 carryover just doesn't work on a Coupe. It's very squared and boxy and "thin" which isn't a hot sleek look a "4 Series" should deserve, but works perfectly on a smaller Sedan. However, I never loved the E92 for some reason although I think it's a great design that still looks extremely modern and relevant to what's coming out today, and think the F30 is a much better design as are all BMW's that are coming out during the "F Series" phase after the "Bangle-ized E Series phase".

IMHO
I think the base E92 LCI was a step backward. The M-sport was essential to the LCI E92 just to fix the front and rear bumpers.

The F32 looks really great and much better than the concept with its absolutely fugly front and rear air dams. Hopefully they have also fixed some of the steering & suspension issues of the F30 that will carry over to the F30 LCI.

Really? I think the exact opposite. F32 is much nicer; especially when looking at the side profile picture.

It does look better, but I'd really like to see it in person. It looks great in some of the pics from some angles and in others not so much.

It looks all curvy and sexy here

But not so much here

Agree, I hope there's no big blind spot to the right rear end.

However, I think this car will have more showroom presence.

The greenhouse is still pretty "airy" and generous for a modern day Coupe (even 4-Doors are starting to go for the army-tank thing of no window, beltline to your chin therefore isolation-room interiors). I feel BMW wanted to make the car very "3-box" and seemingly upright for a Coupe, with an A Pillar that isn't so exaggeratedly slung back, etc. to maintain the heritage of the "3" Coupe like the E36 and E46. Put that in comparison to the 6 Series who naturally with its extra length helping, has a very raked A Pillar, small windows and very "low-slung/flat" look.

I gotta see the 4 in person, of course, but it seems to have a more upright presence to me.

Are there really 4 inches more room between the front seat and the roof line (97.1 vs 101.1)? That is huge!

I should have mentioned that these drawings are in MM for sizing, not inches which means the difference is 40mm or 1.5748 inches.

Sorry for any confusion.

So bummed about the Toyota Corolla bug-out taillights. Flush with the body panels is the right way to design lights. And the visibility of the current version wasn't limited enough, they had to take away more glass?!

Wish they'd waited one more year so I could've leased an E92. Guess I'll have to buy one used...

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I was thinking maybe the decimal point was hidden there somewhere for inches. Then I thought maybe it was cm, but that made the car 45ft tall. I knew the cars kept getting larger, but didn't think that much larger.
