What would a smart guy do here?

Tstat is throwing codes and i'm pretty sure its failed open.... I have been driving around on it for approx 1,000miles. Im expecting to take a long trip in a couple weeks and also i dont want any long term emissions issues from the bad tstat. Indy wanted $1500 to replace tstat and water pump. I would rather save $1000 and DIY even though i have never done i before but i have access to tools and mini lift. Car has 90k miles now so im expecting the waterpump to blow anytime between now and another 30k miles. I find it hard to justify pre-emptivley changing out a $550 part when i dont have bags of cash around but at the same time dont want to have to repeat much of the same stuff to replace the pump a few thousand miles after the thermostat. What would a smart guy do?

i would change out both while i was in there-- mostly because with my luck i would get about two days before the pump died after the thermostat. then comes all the same work and another coolant bleed....
since its not a q of if but when... i would just suck it up and replace it now.

I look at these kind of things in a different way.

My rear shoes, with 62K miles on them.

I had the car in at the indy, and the rear shoes had not yet been changed, and he calls me up (I told him to take a close look at them, the iDrive said I still had a few thousand miles on them), and tells me, yeah, you can probably get another 3, 4, 5 thousand out of the pads. How is the rotor? Still good. OK, says me, change out the pads. I got 60K out of these pads, if I get another 50K out of the new ones, that would be great and not at all unexpected. If I blow it and hurt the rotors, I will be in for a bigger bill.

So, if you got 90K out of the combo, and change them out before there is a problem ( you know you need the tstat, you also know the pump is on a count down), you get another ~ 90K miles without a problem there.

Or, maybe, you are on the side of the road in Winslow Arizona, or where ever you are going, with a blown water pump, and maybe something worse.

Bite bullet.

Do both, or will turn into two PITA jobs, the latter an a much less convenient time.

Sorry! Have DIY for N54 only. Anyone?

You'll probably be fine driving a few thousand miles with it failed open. It took me that long to realize it had happened on my E46 330i. Temperature wise you won't really notice until summer ends. You may see your mpg's drop off.

You might want to shop another Indy. That $1500 sounds a lot for 2 very basic repairs.

Cant help but ask why folks don't protect the investment you've made by investing in the BMW Extended Warranty/Maintenance.

I can't speak for others, but doing the math, my indy is cheaper than BMWs maintenance, and I can self insure for future failures. Having bought the car new, I know I did the extra oil changes, never skimped on any service or materials, and garaged the car. I know how I drove it, so I am self insuring.

OP, the pump isn't going to last another 90K. Do it now, or do it later at possibly greater inconvenience and expense.

My approach is never to fix a car half-assed. You might do the thermostat and have the water pump go out the next day. Do it right the first time.

When I was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey in California I specifically stopped on the drive out there to spend the night in Winslow, Arizona.

There are two parts to your question 1) do T-stat and pump together or just T-stat? consensus is do both.
2) indy or DIY? How competent are you with your hands? Are you detail oriented? Do you have experience doing other DIY projects? Do you have someone to help? How much is your time worth?
There are opportunity costs to DIY.

What would a smart guy do here?

Here we go with penny wise, dollar cheap threads again.

No issues driving and paying for an expensive German car but when it comes time to maintain it, some folks belly ache. Do it now, both.

Rest assured, this isn't even the most expensive repair you may face. If you don't have an appetite for higher-than-average repair bills, sell the car and buy a non-German brand.

Great stuff. I kept looking for Jersey Joe until I remembered he joined much later.

Is that Jackson Browne sitting in on the piano? (There were only three hairstyles in the '70s so it's hard to be sure.)

I've done a few diys before- pads, rotors, oil change, tranny and diff fluid drain and fill, basic suspension part replacement.... I found a pretty good looking DIY on the fest so I might just go ahead and get the parts from Tisher and have a crack at it.

What would a smart guy do here?

This post is nothing to do with being penny wise and dollar cheap. It's about making the smartest choice.... Wasting time is never smart and neither is wasting money. I have a budget to fix my car but why blow on something of you might not need it. Maybe you should no longer reply to "what would a smart guy do" posts if your only solution is to throw inefficient money at it.
