E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Ordering 128i this week - two final choices

I am 90% set on my order, but I do have a couple issues that I need to clear up before I finalize order. I meet with my CA Wednesday this week. Here's what I do know:

Jet black, manual transmission, cold weather, sport seats, and 313 performance wheels and tires. I live in MN so the stock wheels will get fitted with Blizzacks for the winter.

What I haven't decided on is interior color. I do not want an all black car. I've had that the last ten years. So, I'm trying to choose between the Savanna Beige and the Coral Red interiors. I like that they are both two-tone. Very sharp looking. I'm a little worried about the beige being too light and staining too easily i.e. jean transfer. But I'm also worried about getting sick of the red, or, god forbid, having it fade to pink! Yikes!

Lastly, I'm struggling with whether or not to add the M package. I'm already adding the sport seats $400, so the M package is only another $1500, but I'm not sure if its worth it. I don't really care that much about the wheels that come with it. Those will be my winter wheels. I like the body kit though. That said, what I really wonder about is the M suspension. What is it really? Is it stiffer? Or lower? Or both? If it is stiffer, will coupling that with the 313 wheels and tires make the car unbearably harsh?

This will be my daily driver, and although it may get tracked a couple of days a year, that will be solely for fun, and not in any serious manner. I'm a total rookie on the track.

Any help or advice on either the interior color choice and/or about the M package would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

The coral red is a love-it / hate-it sort of thing. If you're planning on keeping it a while, go with what you like. I don't think you would grow tired of it, and I think the red stays red. For me, I find that I tend to like more distinctive things (like a 1 series, over the more ever-present 3) more, the longer I have them. But, for resale, the red could limit your market.

As to MSport, I'm not sure what part of Minnesota you're in, but in St. Paul, the potholes this year have been harsh (not true in all parts of the metro area). I'm glad I have a regular suspension (groans go out, but it's the truth for right here). In the twin cities, it looks like there is a used 2011 135 Msport coupe at Minnetonka, so if you're close, you should try it out on your own roads. By the way, I have Michelin Xice2s, and I recommend them for here.

I think the Coral Red will look great with black exterior. I would also recommend the M Sport option.

Ordering 128i this week - two final choices

I'm in Woodbury, so roads are better than St. Paul, but not much. I'm leaning towards the red but skipping M package. Just realized I lose heated steering wheel with. Forgot about that. Given our weather, I think I'll like having heated steering wheel in addition to the heated seats. Plus, I'm not sure I will like stiffer suspension given the 313 wheels and low profile tires.

Thanks for help!

Yes, but included with cold weather package. If you go with M, they give you a $190 credit

Cannot comment on the M package as I do not have enough experience from test driving M sport vs. non...though would maybe be concerned about it if your roads are harsh like here in New England. Re interior...I think the coral red/black body would look spectacular but it's a personal subjective thing...you gotta go with your gut....but do think maybe the red will give the car more notice come resale time.

If you're keeping a car 5 years plus, don't worry about resale. If you're leasing, don't worry about resale. If buy and sell within 5 years, then resale is a factor, and car colors are like interior house colors - neutral is better (unless you're talking 1M where the Orange may be better than the others).

I really like my heated steering wheel. Had to use a different car (without one) this April / early May, and missed it a good bit.

I have the beige, and I absolutely love it. Here in Florida there are a comical number of white 1ers and 3ers with coral red interior -- Fields doesn't have any listed in inventory but I think all of the major South Florida dealers do -- so it actually stands out a bit, especially with the space gray exterior.

But that being said, this is Florida, so you don't see the interior hardly at all after you get the windows tinted. I have to stand right next to it to see inside, and I have to listen to see if the doors have locked with the CA, because I can't see the black door-locked indicator.

With so many 128i available each year used because of leasing, I think a car that is not one of the generic offerings (and therefore stands out might be easier to sell. The market (at least around here) tends to be flooded with cars w/oyster interiors. I agree though....if keeping >5 years or leasing, it's not an issue.

All of this is either here nor there.....go with what you like and feel will put a smile on your face each time you look at the car.

An aside...I've never had a car with a heated steering wheel. I am curious about what I'll think of that feature (which I have on my 135i).....but am not looking forward to it because summertime is soooo top down glorious.

When picking colors, you might check with your hair stylist, since I believe they have special insight into such matters.

Red or coral red is a horrible color. In fact, I'd call it garish. Also as it ages, it takes on an even uglier look. Now you might like it if you are used to living in 15th century castle, but it isn't a color for the modern world.

Ditto JimS 135i. Black on red is stunning; M Sport is a MUST. Take a look below. How can anyone not love the M Sport front bumper view with those mean ass zeon lights? (IMO)

Double ditto.....Black/Red is stunning. White/Red is also very nice IMHO. At one point, I was considering Silver/Red but it just did not work for me like Black...and the dealership didn't have Black/Red in stock. Here is a pic of the Silver/Red:

Went with Space Gray (darker than silver) with a black interior..

Good luck with your choice and enjoy the car!

No red cars (inside or out)!

Apologies to Curt Russell in Used Cars.

Seriously, I thought the red looked great on the configurator, and not appealing at all in the flesh.

You'll have an easier time selling black/coral with the sport package.

That's funny as I thought the opposite. Almost didn't order when I put the car together on the config. Dealer got coral red in before ordering and it sold me.

I agree....BMW booklets, internet images....neither quite capture what the coral red looks like in person. I was concerned it was a tad to garish and then I saw the car configured with red interior...nice looking, you can certainly do worse (for example, oyster..Zzzzzzzzzz).

Talking

Thanks, guys. Order is done and car should be in production shortly with PCD delivery scheduled for August 30th.

Final order: Jet Black, with Coral Red, manual, cold weather, premium, and sports seats.

Thanks for all the opinions. The red finally won me over. My wife and daughters all voted that way, too, so . . .

Countdown has begun: 66 days 'til delivery!!

Thanks again,
Bill

I have black/coral and the M-Sport package. After four years I am still very happy with it.
