2008 owner here. When I compared the differences, I didn't find the iDrive update worth the price difference in the cars. Knowing that I could later upgrade the iDrive (through ModMyNav and others) if I ever changed my mind made me feel perfectly fine with my purchase.
I think a much more significant factor would be how long before the warranty expires, no matter which years I were comparing.

Thanks for that reply...that's what I figured...looking into a 08-10 depending on the right situation and price...

Here's a data point for you in your research: just paid $40K for an 08' M5 6spd manual w/ 43K miles still under CPO. Decided to forego updated iDrive in 09-10' for CPO/manual. Car exceeds expectations...no matter the year! Good luck!

Thanks mwairdo..that confirms it for me that the 08s are fine if u can live with the older idrive...I myself want a manual 6spd as well but they're very hard to find...

I'm also toying with the idea of a '08-'10 M5, Stick shift, CPO, Under 50k miles. What are the weak points and things to look out for?

After 07', the M5 seems to be pretty well sorted out. There are issues with the SMG but if you are looking at manual cars you don't have to worry. I think the downsides are well documented: poor gas mileage, expensive maintenance (brakes, tires, etc.) and risk of speeding tickets!

Big difference between 09' and forward is updated iDrive. If you don't mind the older electronics, I think the 07-08' M5 is one of the performance bargains of the century. And there are lots of independent BMW shops around - just interview them about their experience with the V10.

I purchased my 08 m5 for $28k it has 80k miles, I did my research, Carfax and went to a BMW dealer to look at the previous history and a diagnostic which cost me $160.00. Car was very well maintained, and in great condition, so I took the leap of faith. I am very happy with my purchase, very hard to find a vehicle with the same type of performance for the price. Now I have extra $$$ to play with. DEFINITELY BUY EXTENDED WARRANTY for the vehicle if it's not a CPO!!!
