E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Is the 135i dead after 2013 ?

So is it?
Are they moving to the 2 series instead?

If so from the pics I have seen it looks bigger.

Kinda like the lines of the 1 better.

Yes. Yes. Looks a smidgen larger, yes.

The looks thing... well it's a bit of a personal thing and probably a bit misleading. Personally I couldn't stand the lines of the 1'er in pictures... still find it a bit awkward looking except from certain angles. However, in person the lines make a lot of sense... that short trunk really sets off the sportiness of the car, but in pictures it nearly always looks like an afterthought... or chopped off.

Personally, I'll wait until I see it in person.

Ouch.

Even BMW's K1200R for motorcycles is bigger than that. In fact, now that I think about it, the M10 engine for the New Class started as a straight-4 1.5L. Turbocharged or not, it's a little disconcerting to imagine driving a BMW with an engine smaller than the one in the New Class circa 1962.

What's next, an engine mirroring the Vespa Super Sport's 1cyl 300cc engine? I mean, it produces 22hp, but I'll bet a BMW engineer could squeeze at least 30 out of that one cylinder.

Seems to cheapen the Ultimate Driving Machine slogan almost to the point of comedy.

Not that anyone in Munich asked me, but I think they'd be better off using a 3cyl 1L engine in a hybrid-drive configuration where the engine runs on demand to charge the battery. An electric motor can really scream -- like a Tesla! I wouldn't buy an ActiveHybrid (why bother) but I'd definitely buy a car where the battery was harnessed to a pure electric drivetrain and the engine only needed to run to recharge the battery.

The 8 series already exists...
E31 was built from '89-'99.

Boy, given the size inflation of the F01 750Li (205in x 75 in) and the F13 coupe (192in x 74) over their E-model counterparts from the '90s, think of how gigantic an 850i Coupe would be today! It might be bigger than a Crown Vic. The F13 6 Series is like 10" longer than the 8 Series was, and that's shorter than the 750Li.

I guess it would be a worthy competitor to the CL65. Not that I understand why anyone buys the CL (over the SL, Z4 or a Porsche) either.
