E63 / E64 6 Series (2003 - 2013)
The E63/E64 BMW 6 Series builds on BMW's sporty heritage with aggressive lines and an incredible motor to back the design up. Available in coupe and convertible trims with a standard 4.8 liter engine producing 360 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque, the 6-series is a popular choice that exceeds expectations.

Hood Insulation - Remove or Replace?

I have the infamous hood insulation shirinkage. I already called and I can get a new one for $125. But I've been doing some reading and most people say that it is only sound insulation, not heat insulation. The M3 sold with our V8 motor comes without one from the factory. Well I wouldn't mind a little more sound come from under my hood. Maybe I just pull it and go without. Anyone have any experiences or knowledge to share?

Personally I would replace the insulation, I think it serves a number of uses from sound, heat and keeping crap from the underside of the hood.
Better the sound from the exhaust and a quieter engine IMO !!!! But then again think of the weight saving ??? will shave 0.0000001 sec off the 0-60 mph time

As hot is it get under the hood on a 6 series, I would keep the insulation on to protect the hood. You could always add some more buttons, to hold it on better.

What's the part number for the buttons and how would you add them on?

I ended up replacing it. It is a nice piece of the car when new. I don't think you can add fasteners. The design fits well when new anyway. I am going to try to keep it clean to see if that helps with shrinkage.

Is a carpet located under the hood and helps with noise and heat insulation. In most cases it get smaller with time.

I replaced mine last year. My OCD would kick in every time I opened the hood.

This is good to know. I haven't sprayed it down (and won't) but I wipe it off when I do the engine bay.
