Based on the pics you have posted, I'm just going to state what is obvious.
There is little evidence, if any, that your car is a genuine M-sport. If there was any, you and the prior owner basically butchered it out of the picture. As such, your car is a regular E39 540 with a sport package that originally came from the factory w/ a stock front bumper and looking exactly like this:

http://fyiauto.com/cars-sale/cars-fo...ngham&state=A+

Then at some point, I'm guessing that the owner damaged his front bumper, and like most owners, went ahead and upgraded to the M-Sport front bumper. That would explain why your front M-sport bumper has black trim pieces, but the entire car STILL has the stock e39 rear bumper, and the trim is color matched like those of all regular e39 520, 525, 530,540.

ALSO, your wheels are 17" dia turbine style wheels, which is what came stock on all E39 540 w/ a sport package. Had yours been a genuine M-sport 540i, your wheels would be 18" dia FORGED parallel spoke set of wheels (very expensive, very rare). PLUS it would have also came w/ matching rear Msport bumper with the single cutout on the L side so that the M-sport specific exhaust tip could protrude out of it. Your rear stock bumper does not have a cutout, nor does your exhaust tip stick out of the bumper. Your exhaust tip is hidden behind your rear bumper.

But by all means, post up your VIN so the pros on here can tell you exactly what your car is.

Actually, both of you are wrong. If your car was an M Sport, it would have the option code that reads:
P337A M Sports Package

Vehicles that have this code on their vin sheet can correctly be called an M Sport. Its really pretty simple, not hard to understand.

I'm not going to fight about it , you consider tr m tech to be only in 2003 , I've seen this forum say that they never came with 540 and m badges ,

It's not worth the fight,

My01 is a mtech , stock to look like a m5 minus some of the little things that they changed to make the car a m5
then your attitude w/ this:
Quote:
then how the fk does my 11-01 have it? stock

you guys are so wrong about this

yep... thats last version of the m tech package

should have the same steering wheel... the same front bumper

i bought the car from the orginal owner... He told me what packages he paid for back in 01

this is what i mean... this forum is full of false info...

theres a lot of people who are swaping bumpers now.. and doing all sorts of things to make the car look like ours

mine also came with the trim painted to match the car.. FRom the dealer
as you can see my front gills have depainted...
and you gotta love that total BS about pressure washing the color matched part back to black...
Quote:
No mine was bumper to bumper TI grey when i got it... I presure washed the front grills back to black... cause it stated to chip

and the first owner paied to have it greyed all the way around

what im saying is he bought it with black trim then paied to have it matched grey

I took the paint off the front when i bought it from him (thur out the years)

I have a pic of the car as is was when i bought if from the guy years back... looks almost excatly how he bought it
finally, the VIN showed exactly what we knew all along, your is a fake jake issue:

Just so I understand you - what I hear you saying is the "M-Sport" and the "M-Tech" packages are one in the same??

No, No, No.....

There is no such thing as a M-Tech package. Period. No such thing.....There are M-Tech parts that come from the M division of BMW. Some of those parts are common to both the M-Sports cars and the M5. If a car that was built prior to 2003 MY had M-Tech parts from the factory then it was simply called a "Sport" model, not a M-Tech nor M-Sport.

There is a M-Sports package....Production code P337A that was only available in the US for the 2003 model year. All 540i 6-spds in 2003 were M-Sports (approx 1200) along with some 540i Automatics (approx 1200). here's the build code from BMW for my 2003 540i M-Sport. Note the items in BOLD

+1 to this whole post. I could care less if your car has the sports package and then you change the bumpers to look like an '03. I had one of those and I thought the car was great. What I wouldn't do is go around claiming it was an M-sport or M- tech or M-anything. Sure it has the sports package and the shifter and the steering wheel have M-logos but thats just the regular sports package so why claim it is anything else?

YAY! bigger engine, less common parts, more money.
Not to mention all the leather that will shrink, etc.
03 mtech is more exclusive anyway.

That's why I bought mine.

Sh*t!
Did I stumble into the E34 section?

Adamo99 is on to something...

I paid 19.5 for my 03 M5.
117k on the clock.
400+HP under the hood.
Shrinking leather in the interior.
No comparison on the road.
(Well, as far as E39's are concerned...)

I love my 540 Sport, and I can't imagine an 03 540 has a noticeable HP difference.
Styling, sure.
Especially the interior.

The 540 got me used to maintaining an E39, Cooling system, valve covers, suspension, valley pan, alternator, (should I go on?)
I was encouraged by some good folks here (Thanks Edgy!) and took the plunge.
Considering how Overwerked1 I am, I can afford the upkeep.

Good luck in finding a great car, whatever you choose.

Aloha,
T

I'm not disagreeing with anything that you're saying- but your car will never be an M5.

Yes, the M5 is going to cost more to maintain, it's going to go through fuel like the Arabs are giving it away free, and I guess the leather will shrink?!? (not sure where you're parking your car- I have had leather interiors for twenty years, and have never walked up to my car and noticed that the leather had shrunk, anywhere- I suggest you stop parking your car wherever you're parking it, or preferably learn to care for your leather).

Nobody is saying the 540i M-Sport is a bad car- for the same purchase price, I would just personally drive an M5, and pay the difference in fuel and maintenance costs. You need to pay to play.

You want economical to run and good on gas? Buy a 4 cylinder Camry.

I'd venture a guess that your friend could sell his car for about 12.5-ish give or take, pretty easily. The ones looking for these cars understand what they are and will pay for them.
