What is this warning light ?!?!

So I've got a 99 528i

Right in the center of the cluster, where the lighted up car shows up to tell you if a door is open or a headlight out, etc I'm getting a light coming on.

It looks like the same symbol as the fog lights except its on the rear end of the car on the passenger side.

I looked in a manual, & a few websites & no help.

Thank you !

Hmmm, its not in your owners manual? Did you look in the manuals index for Check Control or Graphic Display?

If memory serves me correct...the right rear warning not only indicates that a tail light on that side may be out...it also indicates that it could be the 3rd (center mounted) brake light that is on your rear parcel shelf.

Yep...see the image below from the owners manual...hope this helps figure it out:

See I thought it is for a light too. All of them come on though. :/

Is there a sensor that indicates it that could be going bad ?

What is this warning light ?!?!

Its possible one of the dual filaments for the bulb burnt out. One for night lamination, one for braking. BMW checks resistance through the light circuits periodically from my understanding.

Who do you have stepping on the brake pedal to make sure that the right brake light AND the 3rd brake light on the rear parcel shelf is illuminating?

I only ask because the 3rd brake light is oft overlooked...even when an owner has someone else stand behind the car to verify...that other person many times do not report the 3rd brake light...as well as when communicating back to the forum...the mention that the 3rd brake light has been verified is not mentioned so that we will stop asking about it.

And ditto about PHYSICALLY checking the bulbs in the right rear tail light AND removing the 3rd center mounted brake light bulb to check the filaments (especially the ones that are dual filament).

After you've driven yourself bats messing with the rear right light fixture and all of its possible problems, go buy a new third light socket for six bucks and solve the problem.

Check the center light; the one in the back windshield. There is not a separate indicator on the dashboard.

1+ Center Brake Light. You need a pair of pliers to undo the socket!
