e60 NOOB!

Hey guys...this is an awesome thread!! I am a virgin to e60 and to Bimmerfest
--->I was directed here from Bimmerforums, thanks to member 'Booyaazaa'.

I just bought my first E60: a 2007 530xi (after selling the '03 E39, I said I would never buy another BMW, but this one struck me and it was an impulse buy). It's Titanium Grey Metallic on Black leather; fully loaded with pretty much EVERY available option except sunshades and Active Cruise.

Some things that surprised me:
1) If you have the headlights on, they will turn off with the ignition..but the park lamps/andgel eyes will stay on and drain your battery (seems counter-intuitive to me).
2) Active Curve Illumination only works if you have the headlight setting to 'Auto' (again, weird)
3) Cool that bluetooth is built-in and doesn't require any extra modules or silly adapters (unlike my E550)
4) In heads-up Display, the speed you set for cruise control is only displayed until the vehicle actually reaches that speed, then it disappears
5) iDrive is really slow, reading of navigation DVD and route planning is really slow
6) Comfort Access remote can also take a 2025 battery, at the expense of sensitivity for lock/unlock by door handle
7) the Sat Radio antenna is sucky---reception cuts out; something I would not expect out of a $65k vehicle (I have been in Fords and Chevys and Chryslers with more reliable antennas)

The headlamps only stays on for a couple seconds. However if you push the start button once it wont go off until you shut it off completely.

Try it, grab the shorter section on the left of the armrest & push it forward.

^tried that already but it doesn't seem to budge. That's why I was asking if it only pertained to the 2008/2009+ models?

Mine is 08 LCI and it does it. Found out randomly when I moved my elbow forward.

I have had both pre-LCI and LCI, they both do it

Mine (2004) does it too. Takes a good yank to get it to move.

Mein Auto: 2008 M5
Owned a 550i with Sport Package for about three weeks before trading it in on a M5.
I learned a bunch after purchasing the first 5 series.
For the M5 specifically:
The pump that kicks on (to prime the SMG) is supposed to do that.
In the trunk on the driver's side, there's an open compartment behind the carpeted door (the 550 just had a blank panel).
Launch Control (I don't think the 550 had it)
What I thought was a button next to the center dash speaker is actually a sun sensor

And I'm still learning.

1) cold start rough idle (replaced injectors)
2) steering wheel was peeling (replaced bottom piece)
3) stereo audio stops working sporadically (BMW states it could be from using my aux cable to play music from my iPhone)

I'm still recovering from the dreaded "ding" of the e39 warning chime. Every time I heard that, it scared the wallet out of me! So far, the e60 hasn't been a money pit and my wallet no longer shrinks at sound of a chime. I'm looking for a 2008 550 now to add to the collection.

The battery is in the trunk and the hood latch was a pain to find because it hasn't got a sticker

I didn't realize my car came equipped with Adaptive Headlights. Figured that out within the first week of ownership.

It's been about a month now and I just realized that in vent settings you need to change the temperature from hot to cold (or vice versa). I never understood what that +,_ meant until now.

So glad I read through this thread to discover that. I always wondered why I couldn't get cold air out of the vents unless I had MAX A/C on.

Oh man, Oh man!
I made it to page 23 and had to call it quits for now.
Sooooooo much great info!
Thank you. I actually found this on a search for how to activate the headlight sprayers and learn WAY more!
Thanks again ALL!!

I didn't realize that DS mode shifted on its own. Whenever I put my 550 in DS mode I would shift it to 3rd gear and so on. Sometimes I would shift & find myself into 4th gear wondering what the hell just happened thinking that I should be in 3rd.
