Engine oil change & some recommendation

Hey guys,

I own 08 M3 and was wondering how often you guys change your engine oil. I normally change mine every 6,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. This time, I am planning to change the oil because it's been a year, although I only drove it for 2,000 miles.

I also wonder whether you guys know any good places that you want to recommend to change the engine oil around DC area, excluding the dealerships. I used to go to BMW Rockville for services, but ever since the ownership changed, the prices are ridiculous! They now charge for the oil service (only changing oil & oil filter) without updating the service data for $350. Before, the ownership change, they charged around $230 (without updating the service data). So I decided not to change it there.

Please suggest me if you guys know reliable (professional) places to get the service done.

Thanks guys!

If you follow BMW's service guidelines, you'd want to change the oil with the service indicator, or annually depending on which one comes first. I'd probably change every 7.5K, which is the halfway between the service indicator intervals (SII) assuming average driving.

Lots of independent shops out there. Just make sure the have the necessary 10W60 oil (you'll need 9 1-liter bottles to fill the 8.8L oil capacity) plus the oil filter. To set expectations, without labor, your minimum cost is $125-$130 for materials. Your older price of $230 sounds pretty good (about $100 for labor) -- $350 is definitely too high.

Thanks for the reply. They are now charging $120 more for the same service that they charged a year ago, before the ownership change. And, the $350 is without resetting the service indicator (they even charge to reset the indicator!) Is there any shops that you would particularly recommend in the DC area?

Not from the area so can't really help you there. If you are a member of the BMW CCA, I'm sure the local chapter would have a number of recommended shops.

Good luck!

I plan to change mine every 7,500 miles. I'm at 4,200 at the moment.
