New to me X1 - question on exhaust sound

Just purchased a couple of weeks go a 2012 Xline 2.8 with 16K kilometres. This is my first BMW but at idle (under no throttle), the exhaust sound is like a "rattle" such that I have had multiple people ask if a diesel or the exhaust needs repair. Is this normal or do I need to have dealer check out for adjustment. Your comments are appreciated.

FWIW, I kinda remember a rattle coming from the exhaust on a 2012 28i that we test drove last summer. I would have the dealer check it out. Maybe they can adjust it slightly.

I'm sure this will rankle some 28i owners, but that sound is one of several reasons why I got the 35i instead of the 28i - my wife thought the 28i was a diesel when they fired it up in the lot. Dealer said they were all that way - blamed it on the extra space under the hood and claiming it was typical of the 4cyl. I didn't notice it once inside, but the outside racket was awful at idle and that was brand new on the lot.
The 6 did not have that issue. Sounded like a large kitten. Still brings a smile to my face every morning.

It's normal. Lots of people have commented on that, but it's just the way it is and seems to be due to the direct injection.

Chuck: Doesn't rankle at all. I'm glad I got the 28 but nowhere on my awesome list for it is the exhaust note. :-)

Yarp, direct injection makes it sound kind of like a diesel at idle. Completely normal.

The exhaust note of the 2.0L (on the other hand) sounds awesome under WOT

+1

I just love how both engines sound from inside the cabin. Music off, and just punch it.
Oooooooooooooooooooooooh baby.

I was test driving one the other day. We stopped for some reason and a postal carrier parked across the street asked whether it was a diesel.

It does sound like a diesel at idle, which I think is cool... I wish we had the diesel engine plus manual in the X1
