No it's not. The Convertible will still be in production till September. By the way, you bumped a topic from ages ago.

Huuummm...what to do until the 450 hp bi turbo 2014 arrives? Simple solution really.

Get a 2013 335is convertible loaded in exactly the color you want and kick it up to about 420 hp w Dinan kit and make the suspension more manly and track-worthy...

Look, I drove both. I can afford both. But a convertible Dinan S335 stage 3 w full suspension tune is still cheaper than an M3, and I'll tell ya, having driven both side by side several times(including track), there remains a slight advantage to the Dinan due to the useable tq(w dct application). So thats what i've got now.(got rid of my 600hp 2006 cl 600)

It's all subjective...but Lordy, stop arguing. We will all be torched in 9 months when a new, tuned 550hp 2014 m3 blows by all of us, so stop your arguing and chest thumping and worry about what Mercedes is going to do next....
What the? You had to revive a really old thread to tell us it's over?

You can try to rationalize your decision to go with the overrated/overpriced Dinan option all you want, but please do not use Convertible and Track in the same sentence.

I'm glad you went with the M3.

I have been fighting the urge to jump to M3 for 5 years now. However, with good price on CPO ones I might just jump in one. You are lucky

Lol, production run for 335is is over as well, so either grab whatever dealer has (basically nothing) or go home.

I do wish that the would make 550is though... How come there is no good competition for S6 from BMW?

He said 335is convertible, which is still production (and so is the M3 convertible).

What would a 550is look like? More power?

BMW already makes a decent S6 competitor: 550i xDrive. The 2014 LCI version, which comes with N63B44TU, already makes more power than the S6. It (and the S6) are too heavy to be desirable anyway.

Not the same. The weight penalty significantly changes the driving experience.

Optional MT and DCT, 2014 550i comes only with AT. S6 comes with DCT standard. Basically BMW doesn't provide "sport" option in this size at this price point, unlike Audi.

So, your definition of "sport option" is DCT or MT?

I don't think MT is going to be a significant factor. The MT uptake for the M5 is reportedly less than 10%, and much lower for the 550i, so I don't think many share your definition of "sport option". Also, when the X5M and X6M come equipped with AT, it's hard to argue that DCT is a must.

550i's problem, in my opinion, isn't the choice of transmission. The bigger problems are the weight, unsorted EPS and under-tuned suspension.

Drove a F10 550i M-sport and F10 535i at the dealership. I felt it was more closer to my E65 745i in size and feel.

When I came back from driving both side by side and got back into my E60 545i with spt. pkg. I immediately felt that steering feel/feedback and over all driving dynamics of F10 were a let down in comparison.

The positives for F10 were greater power of turbo engine vs NA, better transmission 8-spd vs 6-spd, more room, greater refinement and a host of gizmos with tons of cameras everywhere. It felt more like a 7 series of past then a proper predecessor to a 5 series.

I guess BMW is busy following the industry trend in upsizing all its cars.

Not as much as you would think. I had a 2011 M3 convertible before I went to the M3 Competition package car I presently drive. The 441 lb weight difference is only significant if you're going to track your car.

Actually, that's not true. The 550i can be had with a manual as a no-cost option. Audi does not even have a manual as an option according to their website.

Err, you need to check out 2014 5 series pricing guide. I asked for 2014 550i MT euro specifically, dealer even wrote to hq, still no. On a plus side - got M3 instead

I used to have anE46 M3 convertible so I understand your point. However, to me the weight penalty is obvious in city driving.

As someone who just migrated from the e93 M3 to the e92 counterpart, I can probably provide another reference point.

The weight difference is undeniable and perceivable in daily drives. You can think of it as the e92 + 2 large adults riding with you. I would have really loved to see BMW use lighter construction for the roof (e.g. canvas). I am a bit disappointed that the new M4 Conv test mules seem to have a very similar roof setup.

Having said that, the weight penalty is all forgotten (almost) once you open her up with the top down. The visceral experience from the intoxicating exhaust note that can be heard in surround sound and wind in your face makes the e93 worth the compromise for a certain segment of folks (your truly included). Thanks to the mild climate in Southern California, this experience can be had year around.

Why did you move from the E93 to the E92 M3? For me, it was the complexity of the origami roof on the convertible.

I wanted to get one of the last e9x M3's ever produced, and wanted to get something that represents the e9x M3's character in the best light possible. That to me was the e92 with MT.

That's not to say the e93 wasn't good; it was, and I will miss it.

And, yes, the complexity of the roof didn't help either. It is fun to watch, but when it gets stuck, it can quickly turn into a nightmare.

Just ask this question:

How would you feel driving an M3 and see a 335is passed by. Compared that to driving a 335is and an M3 passed by.

Assuming you aren't talking about at the tracks, I am not sure why anyone cares? No need to feel the need to drive faster than everyone else on the road.

If a 335is passed me by, I couldn't give a rats ass about it.

If you want a street drag racer, the M3 is probably the wrong car anyway.
