Angry 2005 BMW X3 2.5i panoramic sunroof problems (no sounds no movement)

got a 2005 bmw x3 2.5i at auction for a steal, only real problem is the panoramic sunroof doesnt work.

when i push the button in or in direction, nothing at all happens. no sounds, the sunroof headliner doesnt move and the glass doesnt move.
sounds like motor isnt working or isnt getting engaged when i hit the switch.

removed the front dome panel and reseated the cable into the sunroof switch.
the sunroof switch does get litup in the dark so it is receiving some power.

i manually cranked the front motor under the dome panel with the hex tool and the glass did move. headliner did not.

so i know atleast the gears/tracks are somewhat working.

-cranked front motor manually with hex and front glass moved. reversed crank motion and glass reseated.
-no sounds and no movement when pushing the sunroof button in any direction.
-the button is seated correctly with the harness and the front motor appears to be connected to a harness aswell. the light behind the button confirmed has power
-checked 20AMP fuse for sunroof in glove box, looks perfectly fine.
-tried the ~90 sec hold sunroof button in initialization, absolutely nothing happened.

i am getting a multimeter tomorrow, but any idea at this point.
could this be electrical wiring issue? switch/button is broken, or motors dead/not getting power.
is there a rear motor for sunroof? where is it? any additional fuses besides fuse 46 in the front glove box?

is there anything else i can try to narrow down whats wrong without unmounting anything? anything specifically should i check with the multi-meter?

any help would be appreciated, giving myself a week to do some troubleshooting before caving in and taking to dealer/independent shop.

sunshade doesnt move, glass doesnt move, no sounds

There are two motors operating the sunroof. The front motor controls the glass and the rear motor controls the sunshade and the raising and lowering of the wind deflector. Since you have power to nothing I do not think it's the sunroof itself.

Thanks then its probably wiring or the switch.

I have read some posts about the sunrooF control module. is this the motor or the switch? Couldn't find it on any part list.

Any way to test the switch to know it works? Without having to buy one.

I second the switch, however if you can't crack open the glass more than a bit with hex tool proceed cautiously with repair. Worst case is new cassette at $2,500.

Haha thanks for the heads up. I must have read every sunroof thread for x3/x5 I could find.

Yea definitely not in it for more than $1k. But I guess its hard to determine ceiling of price to fix as you go...
I will look into the cassette.

And do you mind clarifying how this might have been disabled?

Maybe this will help.

You are lucky

As strange as it sounds you are in luck. Your roof doesn't work. Leave it that way. Search this forum regarding sunroof issues. If you are out of warranty I wouldn't even try to open or fix it. This could end up being a seriously expensive issue.

We really like our sunroof and would gladly pay to have it fixed if it fails. Nothing like finding a dark spot at night, opening the roof, reclining the seats, and staring at the stars. We actually plan trips to such places.

I've got this issue and resigned myself to never opening the sunroof. What is like to be able to do though is close the headliner! Sometimes the sun is still too much on the kids in back. Any ideas? It's pretty stuff!
