All Aluminum Z3 M Roadster Version??

Someone I know claims that BMW made 600 All-Aluminum M Roadsters in 2000 to improve the power to weight ratio for racing. He claims his M Roadster weighs 1907 pounds. I can't find anything about Aluminum bodies on the internet or anything about them in reference books at all.

I'm also skeptical of the weight, as the car is in full road trim with ventilation system, interior, etc. Hard to shave a 1,000 pounds off of a car that only weighs 3,000 pounds to begin with.

I know enough about metal fabrication to know they couldn't just use the standard tooling to press the bodies, and you also couldn't just the standard techniques of welding the entire structure. To tool up for such a limited run would have cost a fortune, (as would have any cars made with all aluminum) . and I doubt it would be something that would have been missed by the press.

Anyone know anything about this?

I call BS! Walk by his car with a magnet, or you ask to bet him $1k that his car DOES NOT weigh less than 2500# (giving him some leeway).

I bet he doesn't accept your challenge.

What you said!!! Easy money if his 'friend' accepts the challenge.

Easy Money

I'm not sure if he bought the car from someone who misinformed him, or he's making it up, thinking nobody will know. Either way, it's awkward. I pretty much assumed he wasn't right about this, as something like that would have been fairly big news. I don't know if he reads this forum, but if he does---------------------

Randy, perhaps fauxsuper's friend was confused and was thinking of the six MGC "Sebring" cars that the factory built in the late 60's..they were almost all aluminum hahaha

A 1907 pound M Roadster with the S52 stock engine would do 0-60 in what, maybe 4 seconds without trying too hard? That should pretty much shut down his claim right there. The magnet test would provide the quickest proof, of course.

It is entirely possible. Apply a chrome wrap to the Z3 M and the car will drop in value to 1907 pounds sterling. He probably lubricates it with high performance snake oil too.

I'd trade an M Rdstr for one of them__I've always been partial to the one John Chatham built for road courses (not his Targo Floria version). It was Chatham that bought the remaining four (4) bodies and parts that the Abingdon works didn't use.

But YOU knew that

Well, I'll ask him, but I don't think he'll be very keen...
Uh, he's already got one, you see?
What?
He says they've already got one!
Are you sure he's got one?
Oh, yes, it's very nice-a

Steve

After 400 or so of the members here have looked at this thread and not one of them knows about an "All Aluminum" M roadster, I'm fairly confident that they don't exist, much less 600 or so of them. Car owners are sometimes a little like fishermen in that exaggeration seems to be a common thing. In this case, I suppose, if he had been a little less ambitious in his claims like 2600 pounds or even 2700 pounds might not have aroused any curiosity on my part. I suppose saying nothing, but just surreptitiously sticking a small refrigerator magnet on his car door and leaving it at that would be a discreet way to make a point------

I've seen plenty of BMW's offered on Auto Trader and Craig's list with "V6" motors, and actually had a salesman tell me that a 1998 Z3 on his lot had a five speed in it when I called on the phone, and when I came to look, it was an automatic. His answer that it was a "five speed automatic" was off by several years.
