Shaky 535xi wagon

I have a 2006 535xi AWD wagon w approx 110k miles on it. Recently it has begun to vibrate over 55 mph or so (nothing heavy duty, but enough to take notice). We had a local guy look the car over. Wheels are balanced, transmission box looks ok, opened the car up and looked at a bunch of other things. He's a bit stumped. Before we take it to our dealer, any thoughts on this forum around this kind of an issue? I'd like to keep the car.

Where is the vibration? Steering wheel? Seats?

It's the whole car. The steering wheel, drivers seat, passenger seat. It's not excessive but enough to trouble my wife.

Did you have the tires thoroughly inspected, not just balanced? Sometimes the tread can wear unevenly and cause vibrations.

Yes, he looked at the tires. The front tires are ok and in balance. The rear tires are worn and should be replaced. He recommended we replace the rear tires and put the new tires in the front but he wasn't convinced that would fix the problem. Transfer box is ok and the struts aren't leaking, which would be a bad sign.

Does this vibration occur all the time? Or only under load? ie accelerating.

If it's just under load, look at all the drivetrain mounts. Engine, trans, diffs etc

Good thought. It happens above 55 at steady speed (no acceleration)

Any noise? Maybe check wheel bearings? They normally don't cause vibrations though.

You can also check bushings an all arms.

Any worse when braking?

Did you have any service done recently, specifically with the wheels or brakes etc? Sometimes if you don't mount the wheel correctly, you will get a vibration. Happened to me last summer. I didn't mount my wheel correctly and over 90mph, my car would shake.

Loosen and retorque your wheels. If that doesn't work....have any friends with the same car? Try their wheels. If the shake is gone, you know it's either the wheels or tires.

FYI, a wheel and tire can balance perfectly on a balancing machine, but that doesn't mean it will stop vibrations.

You can also try moving the fronts to the rear and vice versa, granted you wheels/tire setup is not staggered.

bushings

Vibration @ 55 mph is quite common at this milage; check bushings; its an easy repair if that's the issue.
