suspension level issue

I got a 1993 740i for my daughterlast month. A couple of weeks ago she came home saying it was hard to steer. I looked under the hood and found what I thought was the power steering fluid reservoir.I added Auto Zone store brand power steering fluid and it seemed to correct the issue.Yesterday she came home saying she got a warning to the effect of "suspend level see manual". Of course I don't have a manual. My question is is the suspension leveling system hydraulic (I originally assumed pnuematic) and is the power steering pump used to supply hydraulic fluid to suspension? Does anyone know what the manual says to do in this situation? i forgot to say that the rear end is noticeably lower. Hopefully its not an expensive fix. Anyone have any suggestions of where to start?

Hey well first off is the 93 740i takes a special power steering fluid call CHF 11s or something like that can't be nothing different and as suspension leveling I have the same year 740i I'd just go the easy route and just but the spring and shock assemblies instead of the auto system I have the spring and shock assembly on mine and it still rides amazing. Hope I could help

The leveling suspension is awesome; powered by one section of the two-stage PS pump. It does not take the usual PS fluid nor it should be used... ever.

It uses Pentosin, a mineral oil, in either CHF 7 or 11 formula. The 11 may be okay for use in the system which probably took and has 7 inside, as mine does. I cannot verify backwards compatibility.

The safe thing to do would be to have the system flushed, then filled with the right fluid. I cannot know exactly how much regular PS fluid would have to be in it before there is the need for a complete flush. Most any parts place will have it, esp if they cater to foreign cars, but it is pricier than PS fluid.

I'd suggest getting at least an owner's manual, and getting familiar with the car's features, alongside your daughter. You may find some nice surprises to counter this nastier one. These cars were very sophisticated for their day and I find it to be my fav BMW of all, and the best riding car I have every ridden in; far superior to either my E38 or our 745Li. No question; no contest. To go to springs is a huge step down, when usually all that needs replacing (ride gets rough) are the 'bombs', unless the shocks are leaking. At 268k miles, the shocks on mine are original, without leaks.

I'd also suggest finding a reputable local BMW mechanic, perhaps via the BMW club or a forum.

+1 on the owner manual. So much to gleen from it. Try wreckers and/or e-bay. Would have saved this mix-up.............
