Another issue - instrument cluster lighting

Still less than 10k miles on my '13 X3 and another issue had presented itself. My instrument cluster no longer lights up in daytime mode. More than half of my commute is in the shade and the instrument cluster is clearly no longer lighting up withe the white daytime backlight. Waiting for the dealership to open up to book yet another appointment

Re: Another issue - instrument cluster lighting

At least it's happened while under warranty :-)
I'm starting to think that the extended warranty isn't a bad idea. But for $3600 plus 13% tax here in Canada I think that I will pass!

Are you sure that you ever had white daytime instrument cluster backlighting? It may have changed for '13, but my '11 only has the red lighting.

Yeah I'm with 02420x3 - I've never noticed any white backlighting during daytime driving; just white text. Red backlighting turns on at night. Which switch position are you in? is the cluster light intensity up all the way?

Let me just say that yes I'm familiar with how my instrument cluster looks after spending 2 hours per day behind the wheel of my car for the last 5 months. Therefore it's pretty easy to notice a difference from one day to the next.

Could just be the difference between CAN and US markets. But I'm going to be watching a little more intently on my trip home later

The hood over the cluster is so big that without backlighting the dials aren't very visible. It might just be something you don't notice until its gone

Another issue - instrument cluster lighting

Ok so I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong. After going over my issue with the dealer they described my situation to me. If I'm driving with the light at my back/side the cluster looks bright and illuminated. This week I'm driving through a detour and when I'm facing the light the cluster disappears like in this photoClick image for larger version

The images I found when searching this problem don't pertain to my car

Well, let me be the first to admit that you got me, LOL. You sounded so sure that you were correct that when I went to dinner earlier tonight I was peering at the instrument cluster, searching for the faintest change in lighting on the gauges when I started the car. My wife was looking at me like I had two heads...

There are times when I'm driving into the sun and I've had to turn on the headlamps/cluster lights just to get a good enough view of the dials.

I've had my 2013 for almost a year and pretty sure I know her in and out by this point.

PS what are those rectangles in the lower left of your windshield?

Am I correct to say the X3's gauges do not have daytime lighting, just the amber night mode light? That is unless you have the extended content gauges that comes with the HUD.

Those are inspection stickers on his windshield. PA requires a state inspection (and in some areas an emissions test) every year.
