86 528e batteryless SI board reset

I have been searching the forums but I cannot find one that includes a batteryless SI board. I tried jumping pins 1 to 7 (15 pin) but no luck. So I thought the batteries must be bad but once I completely disassembled the instrument cluster there where no batteries. Can anyone help?

I saw guys selling batteryless SI boards, possibly on Ebay. Search mye28.com you might find some info there. Shouldn't disconnecting the regular underhood battery reset everything if there's no battery on the SI boards? Keep us informed. The SI board seems to be a continuing problem on these old cars.

Well when I took out the instrument cluster I had the battery disconnected and it did not seem to do anything. I bought it with this cluster already in it so when I opened it up I was surprised to find that the ground wire was not hooked up to the cluster, and I guess that was not the problem either because I still have the Inspection lights after trying to clear them.

Also I guess that the batteryless boards have flash memory like a USB stick that stores the info for inspection stuff. I guess like a USB stick, you don't lose the info on it just because you have no power.

See 'Dash Board Problem'.

You might have had an 'original' SI board that had a leaking NiCD battery(s) that was removed. A later replacement SI board was 'up-dated' (re-designed?) and the lithium batteries replaced the NiCd. This is probably why you can't 're-set' the SI lights without the batteries???

I would try finding an 'up-dated' SI board / cluster at the local 'U-Pull-It'. Remember to look for a lithium battery instead of the NiCd.

You can also just try to add lithium batteries to your existing SI board. There is a 'How-to' write-up somewhere. Personally, I would first try the wrecking yard for an 'up-dated' one.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
