First Car Search

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to Bimmerfest. I'm 13 turning 14 soon. That means I will be taking drivers ed soon and getting a license soon.

I'm looking to buy a BMW for around $2000 or cheaper. The reason for the low price is because I want to be able to have money to upgrade/maintain the car.

I have looking at E30 3 series as I have seen that they are known to handle very well as many other BMW's.

This 1989 BMW 325is /sport pack is for sale for just $1950. I would like to hear some thoughts from you experienced E30 BMW owners or other BMW enthusiasts on this car. Below is some information and pictures of the car.
Price
$1,950
Mileage 245,000
Body Style Coupe
Exterior Color Red
Interior Color Tan
Engine 6 Cylinder
Transmission Automatic
Drive Type 2 wheel drive
Fuel Type Gasoline
Doors Two Door

This is what the seller says about the car: 1989 BMW 325 is. Sport package includes; sport suspension, limited slip differential, front air dam, rear spoiler, BBS wheels, sport steering wheel, special seats. Upgraded sound system with super speakers. Mostly highway miles. New paint 4 years ago, minor rust and a small dent in the right front fender. New Cap, Rotor, Plugs and Wires last year. Valves were adjusted but the #1 Cam lobe is worn and the Cam will need to be replaced ($165 on ebay) to solve the missing in #1 cylinder. Car has been garaged and not driven since last fall. It's a tight little Bimmer and handles great!

Since when do you get a license at any age under 16? And don't buy that car, it's only going to be a headache unless you can do work yourself. Buy some old Honda or Toyota.

Need time to work on car.

Ah yes I will be getting my learners permit/ license after I turn 13, however, being a car guy/kid, I would like to have some time to work on the car, upgrades, etc. (that don't require me driving the car. ) This way if I purchase the car at 14, I will have around 2 years to fix the car, do upgrades. etc.

I assume you don't have too much money at your age. The parts for e30s are more expensive than parts for Hondas or Nissans. If this one needs a lot of work you may be in over your head.

If your parents are bankrolling this little operation, then I don't see the harm, I guess.

I have heard that BMW's are notoriously expensive to maintain, however this car would not be a car that I drive too frequently for the next 4-5 years. And yes a majority of this "operation" will be bankrolled by my parents. and disposable income.

Find something with a manual, much more engaging and fun to drive.

Yes I plan on buying a vehicle with a manual. I have heard the 3 series with a manual is a great car to start learning to drive in.

Re: First Car Search

Hondas are garbage. A bmw is a very reliable car no matter how many miles it has. Mine as 250k and still running good make sure the timing belt is replaced.. not the fan belt.. it dont matter the miles if its a Manual. If your family is bank rolling then get it. Drop a corvette ls1 with a t56 tranny get the mounts. Get a z3 shifter. And your set. Poppin wheeling like a mofo. Or stay with the m20 and turbo it with custom headers and a 2.5 in echaust with dyno max exhaust.. **** magna flow

What planet are you from? I'm no Honda fan, but I have to admit that Hondas are as reliable as gravity.

He's from a planet where they believe you get more reliability out of a Chevy LS1 engine than a Honda engine. LOL whattadumbass

Glad to see you like getting your hands dirty. When i was your age i had to take the motor out of the lawnmower and put it in my Taco minibike. then change it over when the grass was getting to high! The price seems right. i say get it and have fun, just invest in a good Bently repair manual and read this forum. have fun, when your done you will have a great ride.
Enjoy!

You don't want an E30. Not unless your dad is a mechanic with a garage and lots of tools. You have more important things to occupy yourself with at your age. Let the car stuff go until after college. Find a VW Golf or a Civic. And sorry, but Hondas are fabulous cars, very low maintenance.

I have that same car, one year newer, got it with 145K miles. It needs thousands of dollars in parts to make it a reliable daily driver. Any sub-$2K car like that is not a bargain.

Depends on the skills you have / want to aquire. If you just want to spent your / your parents money it can be any car. If you want to learn, use tools and a manual the E30 will end up a great daily drive.
