E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

E30 325i won't start. Makes a thump when I turn key

HELP! I got off work one night and went out to my e30 with no doubt in my mind that my car would t start, until I turned the key and it turned over a few times and then the next thing I heard was a mixture of loose metal, and gears slipping for a quick second, and then it sounded like my starter was just spinning freely...
I went to go try it again, and what happens now is that every time i turn the key, I hear a heavy, and loud thump, kind of like what you'd hear if the starter was just turning and waking metal.
Any ideas on what this problem could be?
I'm hoping just a starter...
But any input is appreciated! Thanks!

Check your starter bolts. The ones that hold it to the bellhousing.

Probably is just the starter, and who knows, might indeed just be mounting bolts. I've somehow avoided starter troubles. I don't get it. My car has over 380K. Lot of those are highway miles but still. I've hard replacing the starter is not a walk in the park. Not to be discouraging or anything.
