Mein Auto: 328i convertible
2009 328i Hard Top Convert problem

Hello all, 1st post on here, but hoping you all can help. My 328i convertible is misbehaving. Out of warrenty with around 50K on the miles. Raise and lower the top daily so heavy user. Yesterday, go to put the top down, the windows lower, and the roof unlocks. You can see the front panel slip up a little. Then it just stops! I mean the whole thing just goes dead. Checked as much as I can see in the truck for an bloackage or non-seating lid. All that looks good. Since it starts to lower, figure the fuses are good, but checked for any blown fuses and found none. I am guessing I have a bad relay somewhere or a bad motor. DOn;'t know how to diagnose this nor do I even know where the motor for the top is located. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
P.S. I also have the frayed lines as well that I have read about on here. Black outer covering gone, but white lines still intact.

More than likely it is a misadjusted microswitch that is causing this. Best advice is to get someone that can read the codes because there are codes stored for a malfunction like this. Also (I have a 2007) The dealer has an updated string kit which should according to those that have it installed (Kat for one) state it wears really well. I would get the codes read to help identify the actual problem and and have the dealer replace the stings even though it will not be cheap the string kit will be done right.

This sounds remarkably similar to when the right cowl hinge had to be replaced on my car back in 2011. This was done as a known issue, and although I don't have the SIB # for it, IIRC my SA did indicate there was an SIB associated. With regard to my top cords, I also had these replaced in 2011. Like yours, my car is an '09, although it is still under warranty - at least for a couple more weeks.

Good luck with the fix and keep us posted.

ps: Welcome to the 'Fest!

Relay it is !!

So, after you all give me a few hints, off i go to locate and shake those salmon relays. All I did was pull them out, lightly clean the contats, then reinstalled them. VOILA! Working now. So, will oder two relays and replace those currently installed with the thinking they might be going bad. Special thanks to AB and CALWATERBOY. Appreciate you guys.

Update: Installed two new relays from Pelican Parts, #12-63-1-742-690-BOE "Relay Changer Salmon Red, Brand: Genuine BMW" at $13.25 a piece. Popped the new ones in and working great thus far with about 15 cycles. Again, thanks for the help. Really appreciate you guys chiming in.
