thought it was a idler pulley

noise in area of fan on my 2000 323i , replaced idler pulley, still there, any thoughts?

Replace the Tensioner and or pulley next. If not then go after the AC tensioner/pulley. Could be your alternator bearing , maybe the water pump. Did you replace the belts?

If you replaced one pulley, you should have done them all at the same time

^^^^ This.... and this is a job where you should definitely use OEM parts. I tried to save a few dollars by using after market pulleys when I did my cooling system refresh and my pulleys started squealing again after only ~8,000 miles. Lesson learned.

+1 - I thought I had a bad WP recently, when it turned out to be a bad bering in the Fan Clutch. Found out real quick once I touched the probe to the WP that it wasn't the one making noise. Diagnosed it by pulling the fan and starting the car. Instantly found my issue.

if you replace one pulley you should replace all of them along with belts
