Soon to be Z4 owner (probably)

Hi all,

Just registered here since I'm looking at getting a Z4 '09-'11 for myself as a combination bday/MBA-graduation present. Open to either 35i or 30i, but the 30i will def. be 6spd.

Been looking for about a month and tracking prices...my sweet spot is around the low $30's range and I'm not pulling the trigger until Jan. or Feb, but it seems that there are low mile '11 35i's around going for mid-30's (with < 30k miles), so hopefully prices improve a little by the time i'm ready to pull the trigger. Definitely going extended warranty or CPO.

So with that said, are there any common problems or reliability issues I should look for? I've seen threads about the crack-prone 19" rims (the 296 style?) and maybe a metallic clunk in the rear end, but haven't seen too many show-stoppers.

Anyway, great to be here!

There's a user here who actually lives near me who is selling his blue Z435i. I suggest you buy a 35i because that turbo torque can't be matched. Also, dat DCT(; However, the 30i engine isn't too bad and is basically bulletproof. Anyway, check out his Z. I would try hard for a 35i if I were you. I didn't and I regret it.

Yeah I saw that post, but I'm up in east PA so that's kind of a haul, but thanks.

I'll definitely be considering the 35i...but even the 3.0 ii'm open to as long as I can get a 6spd on it. My searches so far have resulted in seeing one manual 30i for every 5 automatics, which I expected.

The 35i for sale here in the Phoenix area that is referred to in the above post is mine. We are understandably, too far apart in distance.

However, I am just curious, have you driven the DCT yet?

I drove a manual on every car I purchased from 1997 - 2009. After switching to the DCT, I'd never go back to a manual.

As a seller I am tracking prices too, checking KBB, etc. and I've not seen any 2011 35i's with low miles near the mid $30's. These are all $40k+. A 2011 30i with low miles is in the mid $30's. Perhaps your resale pricing there in PA is lower than ours here in AZ.

I have not driven the Z4 DCT yet, but had the opportunity to drive an M5 with the old SMG for a few months, so am familiar with automated manuals.

Unfortunately the DCT isn't available on the 30i, so if i get a 30i its definitely going to be a 6spd. If i can find a 35i for the right price, I'm open to either, but from what I've found on the internet in my area, i have yet to see a 35i 6spd.

But either way, as long as it's not an automatic, i'm open to both.

I have a 3.0i with the 6 speed and find it to be a great car. Yes, the 35i is quicker but I find the combination of the naturally aspirated engine with a 6 speed to be just about perfect. I am not aware of any issues with this combination. For me, it's just much fun driving a roadster unless it has a real manual tranny. Good luck with your search.

+1.

Also, the exhaust note of the 3.0 at WOT is awesome!

You definitely need to drive a car with a DCT. It's nothing like the old SMG. Right now I'm driving a Dinan 3 335i X drive and love it. It's a manual. I'm looking to add a Z4 S drive 35i or 35is in either a manual or a DCT. My last car was a M3 with DCT and I can assure you a DCT is the best of the two worlds. I wouldn't even consider a SMG but will definite buy a DCT if I can.

EDIT:

Just realized you said west coast...that's too much of a haul. I mean if it was a great deal for a great conditioned car that I couldn't find here, then i may consider buying from the west coast.

Yup.

So you don't waste your time, to see if they fit the bill, my requirements are:

1. If 3.0i, then 6-spd manual
2. If 3.5i, then either manual or DCT
3. < 30k miles
4. Either certified or with existing warranty
5. MY2009 and up

I'm open on colors and rims and packages. I have preferences but they're flexible.

Thanks for the help!
