E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki

While doing the Vanos seals is probably the best mod anyone can do for these engines--I belive you have another problem too address before changeing out those pesky seals. The camshaft sensors--were they OEM equipment? If not , you might have wasted money on those--there has been nothing but problems with other brands--there is a number of things to check--are you getting spark, is there a vac leak,,like a large one somewhere thats allowing too much unmetered air--sorry for not being more specific--but until you find the problem with why it's stalled--the vanos seals are the least of your problems--might try pulling a few of the plugs and see if they are wet--might be getting too much fuel and have it flooded out--if soo --pull all the plugs and take a hairdryer and dry out the cylinders,,then try it--of course after cleaning the plugs also.

Mein Auto: 2008 328I

took my car to the dealership for a diagnostic ($160) with the same code. They told me that this code shows up when its time to replace the intake and exhaust solenoids. My car was vibrating, loss power, and the rpm gauge would go up and down before this fix.
