650xDrive GC - HORRIBLE Rear Seat Ride Quality

So I bought a new 2013 650i xDrive Gran Coupe loaded $108k MSRP...M Sport...20" wheels...and my wife and daughter HATE the ride in the back seat! When driving over what I call "normal" road bumps, I can hear my wife and daughter shouting out in the back seat every time their butts fly off the seat when I drive over a "normal" road bump. I can feel most every crack in the road right in my seat....and my wife and daughter say the back seat amplifies the bumps up through the suspension. I often hear the wheels hit underneath. A $108k automobile should NOT ride like this. I tried 19" OEM BMW wheels with 40R/19s.....they help..but it does not address the problem. I can hear the wheels hitting the undercarriage....load bangs.....it's really frustrating. I've tried Comfort+, Comfort, Sport and Sport+....similar results. Anyone else experiencing this? I understand it's a sport suspension...I own an M3....but never experienced such horrible ride quality. Unless you're driving on a mirror highway or track, the ride quality is horrible. I have an appointment at BMW on Sept. 3 to check the suspension. If they say nothing is wrong, i will invite the General Manager for ride in my $108k Gran Coupe and ask what he thinks of the investment in ride quality...then ask for my $ back. Any advice? Thanks.

I would have advised that what your family is experiencing has much to do with the 20" wheels and the sport suspension, but you've accounted for that in switching to 19" wheels and trying different performance settings. There's also the issue of the run flat tires, which can influence the ride because of their much stiffer sidewalls. In addition, I would factor in the rear seats as somewhat culpable. I experienced the GC's rear seats only from the perspective of a dealer's showroom and noticed then that they do not provide much seat area depth.

Not that my input is constructive, but I have the opposite complaint. Compared to my previous BMW's, this Gran Coupe feels floaty and soft - and I also have factory 20's. Maybe something is actually wrong with your suspension.

I don't know what else you can except. 20inch wheels, sport suspension. It will crash over bumps. Not a 7 series.

My 7 has 20" wheels and RFTs and it does not crash over bumps.

You should have the GM take you out on the other GCs they have. Maybe there is something wrong with your car?

That's odd. Yes, it's a firm suspension, but what you;re describing sounds like something far more than that.

It should be noted that I avoided the 20s for this reason, though. I thought there was a noticeable difference in ride quality -- and tire noise -- between the 19s and 20s. Plus, I love the look of the 19s on the GC, so I didn't feel as though I was compromising the aesthetics.

I am on 20's with non run flats and get compliments about the smooth ride all the time. If I go over a big pot hole then yeah I really feel it, but I honestly think my GC feels smoother than my range rover with air suspension.

The one thing that gets me is that you have an m3 to compare it to. If the m3 is a smoother ride than something has got to be wrong with the GC.

What tire pressures are you running? I don't have an X drive but my GC M sport doesn't have these problems you mention. I am thinking along the lines of an earlier post. Your SA needs to checkout your cars suspension.

I've had similar issue with all BMWs as I would always get sports package which adds to ride roughness.

I would not expect to have as smooth ride in sedan with sport suspension, 20" wheels and RFT.

I would recommend checking the tires pressure mine were overinflated when I checked so adjusting helped a bit. Changing the tires from RFT to regular can help a bit but that's a bigger investment.

Last thing I would do is take it to dealer and have them check if all is okay.

Be sure the car is in Comfort+ mode. It softens the suspension.

Just an update. Went to Bill Jacobs BMW in Naperville, IL today. My SA let me drive another 650i xDrive w/19s M sport..much smoother! My SA also bought and drives a 650i xDrive M sport w/19s and so I asked him to I've my car. After a fee speed bumps and small dips in the road he said..." There is definately something wrong with this suspension". And so Tues AM I have a service appointment...stay tuned!

Good to hear they may recognize there is a problem. There is no way its something small like air tire pressures. Tire pressures may cause a big change in ride quality, but its not going to cause the suspension to bottom or catapult rear seat passengers like you described. Its your shocks or springs, they may be blown or cracked.

This is a long-shot - take a look at the rear suspension and look and see if the shipping blocks were removed. They are inserted in the suspension for the ride on the ship to the USA - someone might not have removed them. Check the springs and the shocks for anything that doesn't look normal.

Thanks...nothing visual (blocks) from the wheel well...wheels/ tires still mounted.Any one out there know what the "blocks" might look like and exactly where they might be?

My car does sit slightly higher than the same 650 xDrive Gran Coupe M Sport on the lot...so you could be on to something. My car goes in Tues AM for the fix....I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the pics of the "blocks" Any chance you know if they are clearly visible (if still installed) from the outside wheel well? I looked up and around the wheel whell with wheel still on and didn't see anything like this. are they clearly visible? Or, are they tucked up way inside?

That's amazing. They must have been pretty embarrassed? At any rate, glad it was an easy fix.

Thanks Charlesberry..and XZLR8 you know they basically just said sorry and left it at that. I called the service manager to let him too know what I thought...was polite....and he appreciated the input. Then he proceeded to blame an out of stat dealer (MO) where they swapped for the "unit". They claimed the MO dealer was responsible for PDI! I just let it go.....we have more serious matters on which to focus..like our health!

Glad to hear there was a legitimate reason for the harsh ride - good thing you spoke up, these forums are priceless for offbeat info.
