Talking Gold Style 42's

Well after a long failed search for some decent style 5's I decided to keep my style 42's and have them restored - I just dropped them off this evening and should be done probably tomorrow if not Thursday morning -- I decided on changing from the stock color to a BBS Gold centers with a clear coated polished lip and black powder coated the backside of the wheels - I will post pics of them when I get them back - stay tuned!

It took me a two years to find the style 5's i have, but it was worth it. They were still in the box and have never been mounted.

It would look better if your car's paint was black.

Not my cup of tea, just like the black ones.
A dark grey would have looked better, maybe. That "gold" is kinda old news. And for flashy, it's like this:

LOL - I did consider the dark grey option but I thought it might look black especially at night so I decided gold was the better option -- as far as old news - BBS gold on BBS wheels is classic and classic never gets old

Love the style 42s. Don't like the gold. But they're your wheels, so if you do that's all that matters.

thx for your feedback ... I do like them - I figured that if I get tired of the color I can always redo the centers for a minimal cost

Look good on there. Again too flashy for me I think they'd look good on my Alpine White. If I had a set to refinish I'd more likely go alpine white.

I've called few local body shops around here and prices to refinish seem pretty high. I had a bused set for winter on my e34 I wanted done. What did those cost to have redone? Who did them? TIA

I like them, I agree with the others when they say they would look better on a black car but they're nice. Something different for sure!

I really like 42s, but I feel the gold centers on BBS basket weave wheels is such a dated 70s/80s look. And then you combine that with the modern e39 lines and it does not work for me. But the important thing is they are your wheels and you really like them so its all good. Also it looks like the wheel place did a really good job.

I recommend using WheelWax or some type of polymer sealant to protect the wheels from brake dust [you may have to wait a couple of weeks for the paint to fully cure before you apply anything]. I also highly recommend the Daytona Speedmaster wheel brush to clean in between the spokes.

Any shots of the black powder coating on the backs of the wheels?

You asked for opinions, and we all know opinions are like........

Anyway, Your car is my car's clone, same color, same wheels, so.....

Not a huge fan of the gold, sorry. I will echo that if you like it, that's all that matters, it is YOUR car, right? I LOVE the way the silver wheels offset the grey paint on my car. Along with the black sport trim, it's just the right balance and contrast, IMHO. To me gold centers work on a track car or darker body color, as others have mentioned. I watch a show from the UK called Wheeler Dealers, where they take older cars and update them. They recently did an Aston Martin DB7, and for the silver wheels they made them a shadowed chrome look. Made a huge difference. I would suggest perhaps a gunmetal or shadowed chrome look, ONLY FOR THE CENTERS! Leave the barrels natural aluminum, it's just so sexy. Hell even paint matched to the 472 code might look cool for the centers. What intrigues me more is the fine refinishing of the barrels. Could you perhaps go into more detail about that part? Did they machine them? Did they clear them? Did they powdercoat them? (doesn't look like it) Anyhow, if I refinished mine I would leave them just as they came from the factory, but that's just me.

Cheers,
John

Wait......no details about the process? Were the barrels untouched? Did they machine out some curb rash? Inquiring minds want to know....

Sorry - they stripped the wheels completely and machined them, powder coated the inside in black and polished the lips and sealed them with clear coat - last but not least powder coated the centers
