Angry 1982 320i Starting problem

I first I had this in the e30 section, but was informed that I have an e21

O.K my problem is my car starts great when it is cool or hot but when it is around the blue area on the temperature gauge it will not start for nothing. I have changed ( fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap and rotor )

Lets say I run up to the store to get some groceries, starts up get to the store and the car is sitting there for like 45 minutes to an hour, when I try to start it. It tries for a second but will just keep turning over, if I give it some gas while I am trying to start it you can smell gas.

Any suggestions would be great

Cold start circuit

Sounds to me like you have a bad cold start switch or poor connection thereto. It is located (if I recall correctly) on a thick, black-rubber coated steel tab with a lifting loop at the front of the engine. It looks like a temperature sending unit and if memory serves me correctly it is the one with two wires. It enriches the mixture during cranking by opening the cold start valve, which is an injector that sprays gas directly into the intake manifold below the throttle plate during the first few seconds of cranking. The cold start switch should only be closed at or below freezing, and yours is probably flaky and needs to get much warmer to open. The symptom would be just as you describe... engine will start if cold (even if well above freezing), but if warm it will probably flood, and if hot the switch is probably (finally) off and the cold start valve not activated... thus it would start if cold or hot but flood out if warm... and you would smell gas. It could also damage your 3-way converter.

Since it is summer, I would just unplug the cold start valve and see if the problem goes away and/or the next time this happens don't keep cranking the engine after the first attempt, but instead floor the gas pedal while cranking to un-flood the engine and get it started.

Report back.

All right thank you for the advice, I changed the ECM out with a new one. It seems to have help a little, well atleast I can get it to start by like what you said holding my foot on the gas. I also had a buddy tell me to spray either around the engine to see if it ideled up, and I found a spot. That is in between the gas distribution box and the intake. But I will check the cold start valve also...

Thank you

Do you have the electronic FI or the mechanical K Jetronic? K Jetronic has the cold sart sensor bolted to the block, often next to the starter. BIG difference in how they work. The K Jetronic manual is on the net and easy to find.
