What you are experiencing definitely does not sound normal. Seems like you are experiencing issues when the torque converter is not locked up. Thats usually the signs of a bad torque converter

I have had mine replaced ... cost me about $1000. I was experiencing all kinds of weird issues including something similar to your description.
