Pics from my auto tour (in the X1 of course!) of Lassen Volcanic National Park

So I decided to head up to Lassen Volcanic National Park this last Saturday. It is not a well known or visited park compared to others, but it is still worth a look if you live out here or are visiting northern California.

First thing though, was to get the X1 nice and clean for the upcoming road trip. Friday I got it all shined up and vacuumed so I stopped at the water for a "before" picture (and a beer at the nearby pub!)

I was on the road at 6, and stopped for breakfast at Vacaville California, where I-505 peels off 80 to head north to I-5. Leaving town, I was treated to a sight of hot air balloons out for a morning flight.

From there it's about a 2 hour slag up 505 and 5 which is pretty boring. Finally at Red Bluff, I turned off the freeway onto CA 36 east, toward the park. (BTW, Hwy 36 west, between Red Bluff and Fortuna is 140 miles of two lane twisty bliss! One of the best motorcycle or sports car roads in the state!). It's still a bit boring at first, but at least there was little traffic

I did find a trail head that made for a good photo op though.

Once you start climbing, the road and the scenery get way more entertaining

After about 3 and a half hours, (including breakfast and gas stops) I got to the park entrance.

Being a national park, the speed limit is 35 in most places, but the road is still a pretty fun drive, and there is lots to pull off to see, including Sulphur Works, which used to be a commercial effort

All in all, it was a fun day. As time was tight, I had to go back the way I came, but this could easily be part of a bigger road trip. As much as this trip was to have fun with the Bimmer, I was also trying out a new camera, so with a few exceptions, these shots were all taken with a Sony Nex 6, and I am very happy with the way it performed. So until the next road tripů..

VERY nice. Great photography, great auto.
I will be taking a road trip in late September from Washington state out to Door County Wisconsin and back. Looking forward to giving my 2014 a good shakedown cruise.

What is the color of your X1? Is it Deep Sea Blue, Mineral Gray or another color? I can't tell from the pictures, but it looks great! By the way, great route to show off the new bummer.

Great pics! If you have the lighting package, make sure daylight running lights are turned on so you see the cool white rings in photos

I have done that for other pics, and will again. This last trip I was by myself though, and wasn't taking up a whole lot of time at every stop to set up everything perfectly.

I used the only two lenses I have for this camera, the kit lens, 16-50 F3.5-5.6, and the Sigma 30 F2.8 prime. The Sigma is a steal at 300 bucks for the image quality it produces.

Thanks! Lassen is underrated. I only spent a couple of hours there, but when I have more time, I will got back and with all my camera gear in tow. Hopefully in the spring when there is more snow on the peaks.

Great car, trip and nice photos. What settings did you used not to get a blown out clouds? Is it the camera features or you did apply post processing?

Thanks! Most of these shots were with my new Sony Nex6 which does a really good job of metering right off the bat. One of the advantages of the electronic viewfinder is you can "pre-chimp" more or less and what you see is what you get before you take the shot, so you can apply exposure compensation before you take the shot.

That being said, most of the time, I just had it on my "generic" picture mode of Aperture Priority, F8 and ISO 200 to keep the shutter speed reasonably fast, as I tend to shoot on the fly a lot. Some of the static car shots are more like f2.8 at ISO 100 to get that nice shallow depth of field. I only have the kit lens and one prime for the camera but it worked out really well.

If you click on any of the photos and open them on Flickr, you can see the EXIF info for each shot as to what camera, lens and settings used etc.
