my door handle broke off...yep snapped off

it was loose and poof it snapped righr off so I have to open the door from the back seat and reach forward.

will an e39 door handle fit on my e38?

I have ripped off my driver door handle like 5 times the e38 have heavy doors look on ebay or rockauto.com for new or used door handle

I did that. I took the door handle off the rear door and put it on the front untill I got the new one in. Pretty easy. Took like 30mins to swap back to front.

You do know that the e38 uses 2 different door handles depending on build date...the early e38s (pre-facelift) aren't lit...the 99 model year up handles are lit.

If you check the part database like realoem.com (if you haven't already)...you'll probably see multiple part nbrs based on build date. And while there...you can also cross reference to see if the e39 uses the same handles.

Hopefully you purchased an illuminated door handle for the facelift e38. I always recommend shopping by first looking up the BMW 11 digit part nbr based on your cars VIN...then searching online using that 11 digit part nbr. This separates the sellers that are selling parts willy nilly from the ones that have referenced the parts they are selling...enough so that they can identify which BMW part they have and the vehicles BMW uses them on.
