Start with changing out that steering wheel. Ruins the whole interior. Most people can't change that on their own and won't pay for it when there are many other cars out there.

It looks nice. I have seen a few other folks have the same problem with e90s and was just thinking that was due to the bad press they got over the n54 recall and the n52 head bolt issues. Not sure what is going on. The right buyer will come along if you are patient.

Does the car have an odor? I ask because of the "tree" hanging from the rear view mirror. A strong (non car) odor or fragrance can put off a potential buyer...and I'd also remove the steering wheel cover...it implies that it is hiding something...even if it's not. And most of all...take care of the SRS light. I'd walk away as soon as I saw that light was illuminated.

+1 on the steering wheel cover and the scented pinetree hanging off of your mirror. That is very ghetto.

So I'm going to be a Debbie Downer here, and give you what I'd be thinking as a potential buyer, since you asked why it isn't selling. Might help if you have answers ready for these.

It's a good price if it has been well-maintained with good records. However, consider that the price of a base 1999-2001 740i/iL are all over the place, some are half the price you're asking. Also, at 98k, just about all the costly repairs are coming up. What have you done to this car recently that would avoid some of the expensive work that will likely be needed in the next 20-30k? Lots of cooling system and suspension work is coming up, the possibility that the timing chain guides have to be replaced, all the engine seals and the valley pan need to be replaced, and the transmission might need to be serviced. A clean exterior/interior with an engine and transmission that is in good shape, without leaks, odd sounds, tires with low tread life, vibrations while driving/braking, etc., this would be a very good deal. Also, I can't tell if you have any mods, aftermarket, or non-stock changes to the car. I see you've swapped out your stock rims for the M-Parallels style rims (are they OEM or replicas?). Anything that screams "ghetto" should be removed (like that wheel cover and pinetree ).

Not saying that your prospective buyers are going to be sophisticated and knowledgeable enough to note all this, but if I were in the market for another 740i, that's what I'd be thinking about. There's nothing attractive about a car that might need $5 - 10k of repairs in the next 20k miles. Plus your $6k asking price, that's a cost of a new car (of course, not a BMW ). Awful lot to consider laying out for a 14-year old car with expensive maintenance costs. Anything that shows up on your Carfax? Like accidents, failed inspections, etc.? Have you checked it? How many owners so far including you? Have you checked KBB value? E38's don't fare well.

Also, as a 2001 owner, I know that cash is King. You can't get a loan to buy this car. You'll have to find someone who's got spare cash lying around and don't mind taking the risk of dumping another $5k in the first year of ownership with lots of time off the road to get work done on the car. The only folks who's got that kind of money are enthusiasts or some kid looking for his first car by borrowing money from his family and relatives. No one who actually needs a daily driver would find this car appealing. Plus, you're in NJ, and after Sandy, it's difficult to trust any car with a NJ or NYC/LI history.

Anyway, my 2 cents. If I had the money, I'd go take a look myself. A couple of thousand less, I'd buy it from you as a parts car, if nothing else!

Good luck!
