Tranny toast?

Have a '97 740i with 95k miles that sat for a couple of months when I was out of town. It is now throwing a check engine light. Codes are P0734 and P0720. Transmission doesn't engage at all in auto mode and barely moves in manual mode in forward gears. Reverse doesn't work at all.

Any thoughts? Thanks

I would try the easy stuff first. Low voltage is known to cause Trans Fail Safe and other issues. I would disconnect the battery, which essentially gives it a 'battery nap' and charge the battery. Any signs of a tranny oil leak? Can't hurt to do a fluid/filter change and see if there is anything on the magnets on the pan.

Got to agree with MayorChuck (getting to be a habit). Particularly if the tranny was not showing any signs prior to sitting. No car likes to sit...especially our machines.

Thanks for the info guys.

When the tranny is in fail safe mode does it act as if it is slipping or does it just lock it into a higher gear?

Does reverse typically work in fail safe mode?

I'm glad I found this thread. My '01 740i has twice in the last month gone into the fail safe mode (third gear only) when going up a long steep grade. It did not show the transmission error code. I pulled over, shut it off for a few minutes, started her up and has ran fine since. (and always has run fine). Service history is 3 or 4 transmission fluid & filter changes in the 152k miles on the clock, all done by a transmission shop I have confidence in. Last time service was done, about 10k miles ago and about 25k miles since the previous service, I asked the tech what the fluid coming out looked like. He said 'as clean as the fluid I going in'. Any thoughts on this fail safe issue?

Did you do filters with the trans fluid change? I use only Redline fully synthetic in my 1995 740i. How does you cooling system look on these "hill climbs"? Transmissions are very sensitive to over-temp.

The lack of reverse has me worried. I still haven't been able to look at it myself or take it to a tech as I out of town. Will the reverse work wit codes P0720 and P0734?

Use a good indi tranny shop.
