Coolant light goes on and off

My coolant light goes on and off at different times. I read some postings here that advised me to get some BMW Coolant and top off and that should do the trick. Well, it hasn't. My coolant light keeps coming on at different times. Anyone have any ideas before I go to my local BMW dealer and give him a kidney?

Might cost you a kidney if you don't give them a few more clues to go on.

Such as, when this first started, if it really looks like it's losing coolant, if it's had any cooling system components replaced recently, or if the coolant was flushed recently, temp. gauge reading O.K., etc.

Or they might go to town on diagnostics and pre-emptive replacement of mature but perfectly good hoses, thermostat, water pump, expansion tank, and so on.

Possible the coolant level sensor is on the blink, or its electrical connection is not so good? http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/17137524812/ES38492/

That could be a cheap fix rather than a kidney.

theres probably an air pocket in the system. everytime that air pocket travels over the sensor, the light will come on since it is reading a high temperature (air pocket temp). just bleed the system per bmw procedures

I havent done any kind of maintainence work on my cooling system since I bought it in April. The person who owned it before me took very good care of the car. I have all the records. I may just take it to my BMW dealer to get an idea of what it is. There are no leaks anywhere I can find. The car is not overheating at all.

I had the exact same problem, read the code, turned out to be a lazy thermostat. Changed it and it'a all good now.

If topping up doesn't seem to do the trick, check the above.

I bought the part (WAHLER branded, same as BMW but without BMW box) for $126 delivered to my door from bimmerspecialist.ca, now merged with pelican parts.

Installation was about $80 or 1h labour at friend's shop.
