Finally going to enforce front plate law in Texas

This has probably been beaten to death here, but I couldn't find any recent posts about the front license plate thing in Texas, so I thought I would bring up this article from the August 31 Dallas Morning News. One of the service guys at Classic BMW told me yesterday that he's running out of screws from mounting so many front brackets since the article was published. A friend of mine says he's not mounting a front plate on any of his cars till he gets his first $200 fine.

I'm still driving my new 550i with a temporary tag, and I guess I'll make a decision about the front bracket when they call to tell me my plates are in. Anyway, if you haven't already seen it, here's the link to the article:

All I can say is by not having a front plate you are begging to get pulled over its its the law. I'm not a drinker but if you had a beer or two or three and get pulled over because you or anybody doesn't have a front plate you get the dumb a** award of the year!

All the toll roads in TX are camera tolls and those and any other traffic enforcement cameras will want the best shot at seeing you coming and going. It's a sea change that's not going back.

Sorry to hear your having to put your front license plate on a car that looks so good. That's sucks but you really have no choice. I would go along with it to avoid getting pulled over that's for sure. Hope this doesn't happen in my state.

A DPD officer friend of ours tells me that they usually have not pulled over people for just not having a front plate, it's usually something else and the missing front plate was collateral damage. My last car was a Corvette and I went for seven years without a front plate, but now I'm resigned to having one on the front of my 550i M Sport. Taking my wife's SRX to the dealer tomorrow morning to have the bracket installed. The sales guy there tells me people have been coming to the dealership in large numbers this past week for the bracket installation.

I posted about it a few days back. I asked a question in the post and I guess nobody has installed this.

I've passed 3 officers since then and none blinked an eye. I've gone through multiple tolls without toll tags and no front plate and got a bill in the mail every time. These toll stations are very complex. A good friend of mine works for one of the companies. There are multiple cameras, lasers, and radars. They detect speed, calculate weight, count axels, and gather lots of data for studies. Having a front plate is not for the toll way. Comparing a front plate to a beer is a stretch imo

Has anyone installed this?

Finally going to enforce front plate law in Texas

I could not bear to think about marring the front bumper of our new Cayenne so I mounted the plate with 3M Molding and trim tape.

Works a charm, and we are legal.

I went through great trouble to remove my front plate. I have no desire to put it on, even with a beer or two in my system. I can't ever imagine a cop pulling over a Bimmer for just not having a front plate. Cops will profile cars based on other factors. A car would have a higher chance of getting pulled over if it had mods that made it sound fast or look fast.

They don't read the front plate, they read the rear plate. How else would they deal with cars from others states and new cars that only have temporary tags on the rear? Which is also why you should not panic over the new law. In order for a police officer to pull you over, he has to see the front and the back of the car. I suppose if they are really looking closely they could see from the front that you have the window sticker on and no plate.

But the bottom line is that I'm not going to over react. I've been "warned" about it when I was pulled over for something else, but I've never been pulled over for just that and I've never been given a ticket even when they do see I don't have one. It's likely something they will use to pull you over as an excuse if they suspect something else.

In Chicago, I'm more concerned about being issued a ticket for no front plate while parked. Our book of rules is so extensive that I believe one can be issued a ticket for a flat tire while parked.

I've gotten one or maybe two tickets for it here on Texas over the last 30 years or so, but ALWAYS when I was being stopped for something else. The only thing to be concerned about is "will municipalities see this as an opportunity to raise the fine to the maximum $200?". If they are getting $75 or so for a front plate violation today and can now get $200, this will turn into a revenue generating tool...much like most speeding violations.

It's not the tollbooth operators or local municipalities - it's the intersection red light camera operator companies that lobby for front plate enforcement as they need a pic of it, your mug and the rear of your vehicle in order to send you your special $375 "prize." If TX is setting up more intersection or highway cameras, this is why all of a sudden it's an issue. Also, in California - I've had a fix it ticket waiting for me on my car when I walked out of a mall (before I threw on a front plate on my old 330Ci) so at least you aren't "there" yet.

The toll cameras in CA take pics of the front, side(pic into the passenger compartment), and rear of the cars, I can't imagine it's different in Texas, and +1 on the pulling over as an excuse, if you look sketchy, and there's nothing else going on, and you don't have the front plate... bam... other than that, I have never known anyone to specifically stop cars primarily to enforce a front plate law...

+1 to the other posters on the parking and getting the front plate ticket... the meter maids out here in the city go crazy over a violation like that... most major cities, with a no front plate law, will ticket the crap out of parked cars, it's easy, and guaranteed $$...

Finally got the plates for new 550i MSport and had the dealer install the front plate bracket. It doesn't look as bad as I feared, but it would look a lot better, I think, if the frames were the same OEM paint as the car itself - at least on my silver car. Has anyone done this or found a vendor that sells frames in original OEM colors?

Take it to a local, reputable body shop. They should be able to paint the bracket the OEM paint color. When I checked on mine it would have only cost about $100.

I have never put the front license plate on the last 10-12 cars I've owned. I did however order one of these just in case it gets to that point...

I've been pulled over twice in the last eight months for no front plate, I already have brackets and holes were drilled from previous owner

It may be front plate time

The new license plate law is now included in the continuing education of most Texas law enforcement agencies. It will be enforced more in the future.

I just got a ticket for this in Houston (Southside Place actually) about a month ago.
I argued with the cop until I realized that I was just begging to go to jail, so I stopped. I ended up paying $50 for the original $145 citation.

Crazy-stupid that this is a law...

That sucks. Was the lack of a front license plate the only reason they pulled you over? Did they give you a ticket? Be honest, were you driving without a shirt on...again?

I have my euro plate on the front, although, I've been pulled over with past cars. It used to be a "fix it" ticket, is that not the case anymore?

I'll add that the only time I've been busted for not having a front plate was by a state trooper.
