F22 / F23 2 Series (2014 - Current)
The 2 Series coupe is the replacement for the E82/E88 1 series coupe. Production starts in November 2013 on the 228i (N20) and M235i (N55) coupes. Look for them in dealerships in February 2014. The convertible F23 2 series will follow in the fall of 2014.

Post BMW 2 Series Set to Go On Sale in March 2014

2014 BMW M235i Coming in March 2014

A week ago, we had our first look at the official pictures of the new BMW 4 Series Coupe. Now there is a new report via bimmertoday.del indicating that the 2 Series will first be shown in official photos around the Frankfurt Auto Show this September.

The United States will see a 228i model featuring the N20 4-cylinder model as well as an M235i that will most likely use the power powerful 6-cylinder N55 engine. As we reported earlier, the 2 Series models will start production in November 2013 - which makes the March 2014 launch date believable.

If neither the 228i or M235i get you excited, maybe the rumor of an M2 version will get you going. Rumors are already circulating about the potential launch of an M2 version in 2015 for those looking for something with even more power.

Stay tuned to Bimmerfest.com for the latest coverage in the upcoming weeks.

UPDATE: Official details on the 2014 F22 BMW 2 Series Coupe are now available

If true, a March 2014 launch date would be highly disappointing, to say the least. I haven't found any confirmation aside from this one bimmertoday.del source, so I hope it was incorrect. Any idea why the 2 series should take so long to go on market after a November 2013 start of production date when the 4 series coupe goes on sale in "late summer" after a July 2013 production date? According to prior SOP/EOP documents, the 2014 228i and M235i both have an 8 month production run (11/13-06/14), while the 2014 228i SULEV version is supposed to have a 4 month production run from 03/14-06/14. Maybe (hopefully) that's where the misunderstanding came from?

It is not very unlike the F30 3 Series sedan. Production on that car started in late October 2011 or early November 2011 and the cars did not go on sale until early February 2012. Not saying we have a source that can confirm that time line but it is not an unrealistic time line based on recent history.

Because beginning of production is when they start building cars for inventory. That means fulfilling orders placed by dealers for their own inventory before they can actually go on sale. Add to that shipping lead times and they usually do conservatively put an on-sale date up to 4 months after start of production. A lot of it usually hinges on the plant capacity as well as the number of plants producing them, too!

The F30 and F32 will be built in more factories and thus have a higher capacity. A lower lead-time for them is expected. The 2'er will be a lower demand car in the US, but will probably have a higher proportion of demand up-front in other areas of the world. Still, it'll be lower-demand than the 3-series/4-series and thus will be produced in fewer factories... thus lowering capacity.

All this basically means that production lead time to build stock is a little longer than the 3'er/4'er... remember the 3 series has been BMW's bread and butter for a LONG time. Add to that the shipping lead time to ensure that the stock is ready on every continent for a simultaneous release/availability date... yeah, 4 months is really not that unexpected.

Even movies (until relatively recently) had similar problems with a simultaneous release. US releases got held back for months because they wanted film on-site to be displayed at all the different locales at once... this problem still exists in some areas of the world. Most of that got dealt with by having ways to transfer and display the film digitally, but there are still places that's impossible or at least impractical. It was either that or have highly staggered worldwide releases of movies... they did that for a long time!

The workaround? Have those same cars built on every continent. BMW's not there, and even if they were I would prefer they were built in Germany. I like my European Deliveries too much

Agree. Can't decide to go with M235 and trade later for M2 or just wait 2 years.

I'm hoping a May 2014 ED is possible cause that's when my current lease is up! I've heard BMW lets you extend month to month if you have a car on order, so I guess I'll wait until they let me actually place an order (hopefully sooner than April) and the request an extension of my current lease until the ealierest available pickup date. Have to hope that they allow ED orders off the bat and don't restrict them for the first year like they sometimes do with hot/new models.

Can't wait for the 2 series to come out. I hope it is a great driving car, and the steering is better than the F30, and the overall car significantly lighter feeling... If that is the case I am in for one.

+100 on May 2015 ED! I can wait also for 2016 ED, but then my extended warranty will have expired so if it happens, it will have to be at or before May 2016.

Can't wait to test drive this ...

Frankfurt????

No mention of the 2-series at the Frankfurt auto show, anyone have any updated info???

Put a deposit down on one, if dont like it, going 4-series (maybe) or wait for the M2 if the it has a sunroof, only reason didnt get an M1, some may think dumb reason but love driving with one much better. If I have to put up with electronic steering at least they should add a sunroof, HA! Really going to miss the feel of the old steering rack, anyone else?

Information about the 2 Series is rumored to be coming around the Frankfurt Motor Show but it won't be on display there - the show is very much focused on the BMW i8 as the new exciting car. The next two possibilities to see the car in person are the LA Auto Show in November or the Detroit Auto Show in January. Since the car goes into production in November, the LA Auto Show seems like a real possibility but there is nothing official at this time.

The wait for official info from BMW is very painful.... I would love to see some official photos and specs on the 2 series. I guess I am just getting impatient.

So, what's the latest prediction - will there definitely be a 2er Gran Coupe or a 1er sedan? They NEED to offer a four door version.

I'm not set on them offering a 2er Gran Coupe. I don't know if they can make the coupe roofline work with 4 doors on such a short chassis. It hardly works on the 4 series.

For a 1 series we won't see one in the US until the next generation, which will be FWD.

I'd be interested in a 2 series gran coupe for sure. I'm hoping they decide to produce it!
