bmw x5 down shifting problem

I own a 2002 X5 E53, 69,000 miles on the clock, FSH, well maintained and looked after.

recently I've started to experience problems with the gearbox down shifting. The symptoms are as follows:

car at normal operating temperature, my typical journey to work takes 15-20 mins. When I get to 40 M.P.H the car changes down to 2nd gear from 5th reaching 4000 RPM, if I accelerate beyond this point, the gearbox changes back up to 5th gear. It will do this several times during my journey. It will behave in the same way if in sports mode, and when in manual if I put the gear in 5th it will auto select 2nd gear immediately.

any help to find a solution and recommend a mechanic in the south east (near Gatwick airport) will be much appreciated as I don't have a clue what the problem is, and I need to fix the problem quickly (not using car for fear of damage)

thanks a lot Richard
