The viscosities recommended are as follows:

Standard open diff: 75W90
Torsen LSD: 75W110
M cars with clutch-type LSD: 75W140

Amsoil DID make a difference with my diff, not a huge one, but definitely quieter.

Based upon my comments on this thread a few years ago, this will be a little contradictory, but here goes..I have owned four Z3s and I now believe the rear axles in most of these cars have some whine to one degree or another....I do not know if BMW buys their differentials from a specific supplier or if they are made in house...but one thing is for sure, they never really addressed the issue...also, even though I praised the Amsoil a few years ago, I now think that was initial euphoric optimism...it really did not help much...I can honestly say that my two 60's/70's mgs have much less axle whine..having said that...the best car I have ever owned is my 2001 Z3 coupe that I currently drive...yes, I have learned to live with that annoyance. :-)

whine can usually be reduced by a thicker oil. make it a synthetic and get superior lubrication, too. the multi-grade of the oil mentioned may make it more effective for this problem but i don't use amsoil due to their truly crappy shipping dept.

mobil makes good synthetics available almost anywhere and i've used royal purple to good effect.

Hello, My mechanic, Neds car care wouldn't believe it. He said he has worked on BMWs 30 years and never had a bmw differential bad but he put it on the rack with his helper inside running it 50 mph with slight pressure on brake for load and used his stethascope to prove it was the diff. It worked and the place I bought it guaranteed it to be quiet, said he never had one with a problem. Paul
