Any Z3 Homecoming Alumni Still Here?

I drove my new 2002 Topaz Blue 3.0i with 53 miles on it off the dealers lot in October, 2002. In September 2003 we attended our first Homecoming event. In 2004 we made it to our groups overnight stay in Savannah but got called back to work due to a hurricane aimed at South Florida. We made it all the way in 2005 and 2006. The Z3 is a special car and back then there was a large group that knew it. The memories of these trips will remain with me for a long time.

-Being at the tail end of a twenty car convoy of Z3s on a beautiful sunny day and sometimes hitting 100 mph just trying to keep up.
-The incredible factory tours including the small hole in my shirt from a welding spark in the body shop.
-Ken Sparks and the great entertainment after the factory floor banquet.
-Shaking hands with Chris Bangle.
-The incredible tech tent and all the magic they were able to do.
-Racing at the performance center.
-An AH that was pissed at me when I touched his precious new 1st gen Z4 while trying to check out the interior.
-Waiting on line for the instant registration opened to get a low registration number (we were #2 one year).

The list goes on but I am curious if everyone is now gone or if there are still some of us hanging around trying to keep our aging machines looking as proud as they did then. My 2002 is very well maintained and at 145,000 miles (it was a daily driver up to a few months ago) the engine is almost factory clean. It needs a paint job, a new top frame (a key structural part recently sheared from fatigue), and the wheels need refinishing but it runs, sounds, and feels just like it did ten years ago. Its just getting difficult now to pour well over $10K into it to bring its appearance back to its former glory.

I'm still here. I made it to all of them after I got my first Z3 in 2002. Most were in my M below. Six in all. Lots of fun and a few adventures. One year a convoy from CA met us and we had a very large number of Zs crossing half the country. We got a lot of attention. Other years we had random Zs from all over join our convoys. Met lots of good people.

Sue & I are still around, and so are both of our cars. We bough the 99///M CPO (5400 miles) in November 2000, then Carter Lee's HC VHS tape of the '98 event was available maybe in early January 2001. After watching his video, we made it a point to attend the 2001 Z3 Roadster Homecoming (the name was changed slightly over the years...). When it became known that our 2001///M Rdstr was allocated to be built in August, we decided to take the Performance Center Delivery option, driving down from Ohio in the 99. I have always maintained that our 01 was the ultimate Homecoming souvenir!

We attended HC 01 through 08, inclusive, and the first post HC Z-Fest

Edit: clearly the BMW ///M Coupes & Rdstrs have had a big impact on my life, and have become my sole occupation for the past eight-plus (8+) years. Now living and working in Florida__where they drive sportscars all year around__I'm living the dream!

Well, I do live (sorta) in south Florida and did drive my Z3 all year round. That is why the top failed, I just wore it out. The structural member connected to the hydraulic ram just sheared at a weak point from it being raised and lowered over too many cycles. I used to wonder what the less privledged were doing when I drove to work in the morning along A1A with the top down and the sun coming up over the ocean on my right. Winters are in fact the best because Florida winters are what owning a convertible is all about.

Somehow I retired last year but find myself now doing doing full time consulting work on a long term basis in an area of NY know for lake effect snow - not a good place for a Z3. I do not get back home as often as I would like but my wife drives "the little girl" (as she affectionally called it from the day we drove it home) when she is in Florida and not up here with me. I have an X3 here and it is a great car (for a SUV) but it aint like driving the Z3. I have owned a lot of cars since my first in 1969 but the Z3 is my clear favorite. My E30 M3 came close but I only kept it 4 years.

Check your PM box

One of my ALL TIME HIGHLIGHT memories from Homecoming was when Sue remarked over lunch about me teaching her how to weld on the next car that was due to arrive...

2006 celebrated 10 years of Homecomings; there would only be two (07 & 08) official years to follow:

01 silber:

Jon, Al, Daniel & Philip:

Andy & Jon (some of Al) a Coupe Couple, and Sue & Dwayne at the end of the table:

Red Jen, aka MZ368, and elf hearse chauffeur Barry:

The Reverend Ron Stygar (Daniel, aka dwm, getting down for a Coupe shot in the background):

Jim, Shawn, aka MBark, Jen & Barry, with CarlM placing his order (I just put a supercharger on his car):

Vinny (CarlM peeking through), and Mrs. & Mr. Pinecone:

I believe 2006 was the only year Zoran (looking straight at camera) attended; I had just finished putting a Eurosport Twinscrew on his Coupe (which now belongs to Jen):

It was no wonder that almost all of us went back year after year; a lot of special relationships were formed, even if face-time was limited anywhere from a few days to a week per year.

I never made it to HC as I bought my Z3 in September of 2008. I have attended Z Fest every year (except for 2010 when it was in LA) and it's been great fun. Next year's (2014) Will be in State College, PA.

Ah, the memories. Thanks for the pics, Randy. I'm still having fun in a BMW but sadly not a roadster.

Great photos!!! They bring back a bunch of wonderful memories. There are a lot of relationships that were formed from these cars, this website, and Homecoming. Many of them survive even till today.

I went to 11 of the 12 Homecomings. It was easy for me since I live in SC.

Indeed! Like I said, it has become my life__well, I've always worked on sportscars, before the BMWs, it was Austin-Healeys, MGBs and Triumphs__but working on the Z3/Ms allowed me to make them my "day job" (most British cars are simple enough that their owners can do a lot of the maintenance, it took the Germans to complicate the simple concept of a sportscar).

To update a comment I made up in post #12, Zoran's Coupe THEN belonged to Jen, but it has now taken up semi-permanent residence here. When either Jen or Zoran want it back, they know where to find it.

I attended the last two BMW sponsored Homecomings in 07 and 08. It was really amazing how much effort Kenn Sparks and his staff at BMW Manufacturing put into these events. The meals and entertainment right on the factory floor and all the tech events, panoramic photos, local drives, and remote social events in Asheville were really quite an experience.

The last Z3 and M Coupe ever produced; on display on the factory floor

The LAST E85 Z4 ever produced

Walking to the dinner in 08 on the factory floor

Getting some repair work done at the tech tent

Lining up for the panoramic photo
