More Learning...

My new CIC stuff is due in tomorrow - three different suppliers: The CIC and various small pieces, the LCI trim plate, and the Pasternack cables. Should be a fun weekend!

I got into INPA some more and saved my UIF so I would have a solid record of the existing modules and when they were updated. Most have an update as of 7/11/2013 - when I took the car into the dealer for that purpose. However, the TEL/MULF, KLIMA, CDC (Dension in my case) and ZBE show the original 2006 date. With the "YYYYYYY" data, this indicates that INPA is not sure what VIN is associated with those modules, but all 35 run "OK". All of my CCC modules seem to have taken the update. They ran into the next day, 7/12/2013 and the service writer told me that it took them four tries to get the CCC to accept the coding. He went on to say that if this had been warranty work, they would have replaced the CCC after try #2. Then he told me that because the CCC ultimately DID take the coding, all was well.

So I think I will wait a day, put the CIC in with existing (old) controller, get that working, then try again with the new one. Of course, I have already modded the console opening to accept the new, so I WILL figure this all out and use it!

I also started working with Winkfp in comfort mode. I understand now how it works to examine modules and "flash" updates. Of course, I have not yet done any of that... It appears that, unlike INPA - where I can scan the entire car and get status on all 35 modules, with Winkfp, you need to know which module you want to examine/flash. Having read somewhere on these pages that our iDrive controllers have no ECU and are not "flashable" I take that to mean that the relevant module with our CCC or CIC is what gets updated? For example, with my CCC, setting a value for ZBE then running manipulation mode in NCS to write it to CAPPL, I see several CCC... modules being addressed in the coding, but not a ZBE... I assume it will be similar with the CIC - which may well just work with the new controller after I default code it to the car after editing my VO... Some threads mention adding $6VA to my VO, but I thought it was really just a matter of changing build date to #0909, FA_Write, then the normal process of default coding the newly found "CIC" module, and perhaps the TCU as well?

Looking forward to doing more in the days ahead.

Here is the text of what I saved from my INPA efforts last night:

There are two things you have to add to the VO--I'll try to find them again shortly. Then the date change also. That date is for without combox--you have to use a later one for combox (not sure of the exact date, sometime late 2010 I believe)

I was getting constant notes that my SG level was 5 (or 6) and that was higher than the INPA level, 1.041 or something like that... I figure that to mean that I need an updated INPA program? EDIT - my INPA is version 5.0.6.0. dated 7/20/2013 (from Chris when he sent me the new v49 datens perhaps), so is there an even newer one? Thanks for helping me get this retrofit done. I did all the coding required the last time and no joy - hope for better this around! If I really felt like it, I would go out there now, put the new controller in (move the wires, etc...) and rerun these INPA queries - that would clearly ID the exact module (ZBE), yes?

EDIT - to compare before and after module ID through INPA, Here's the same info right after install and initial coding yesterday, note count of modules dropped from 35 to 25, some of the same named modules appear now with different s/w dates, CID is now up to a 2009 date (from 2004...) and the CIC-related modules like CCC, etc. now show a date of 5/30/2013 - probably when the exchange CIC was recoded by BMW. More fun for today to get the ZBE2 read and updated among other things:

Note there was no ZBE2 with both new date and $6VA. It appeared with #0909 update... I WILL WORK TODAY TO CONFIRM FACTS FURTHER AND UPDATE... Error messages associated with trying to get both new and old iDrive controllers to work with the CIC...

First set of ZBE2 errors, trying to have CIC work with new controller, after default coding:

Tried It...

I coded ZBE to "low", moved the wires to plug in the new controller and tried one more time - INPA told me all 34 of my modules were fine... Yes, down from 35 last night as the ZBE fell out, not even recognized... I find it hard to believe that one of my CCC modules (all updated just a few weeks ago) would need to be flashed to see the new controller. No worries, the CIC should go in tomorrow and we will take it from there.

Plan for Today

Ok, because I now have all the parts and it is fairly easy to swap CCC for CIC and reverse, I think I will:

1) Park under the sun (a gorgeous day here!) and revert back to old CCC with old controller.

2) Return the VO to old entries (#0906, no $6VA, default car...).

3) Run UIF and edit to the ZBE value in CAPPL, get the old controller to work with CCC and then based on the ZB# numbers it shows, using Winkfp to flash update the CC6260 module to reflect ZB# 9185636.

From checking my earlier saved work and the UIF from 9/11/13 it looks like a few ZB#'s may be worthy of examination. Before installing the CIC, ZBE was 6963051, MOSTGW was 9185627, MMI/CCC was 9185623, and CCC was 9193874. Also, my VIN last seven appeared on all modules except my CDC, KLIMA, TEL/MULF, and ZBE - all those had "???????" as the value instead of "CR46295". Granted, the CGATE and the CC6260 do not appear directly, but perhaps I know enough now to look at things with WinKFP - after restoring all the CCC stuff back in. In any event, here's hoping that I can get at least ZBE and CC6260 sorted out.

4) Proceed from there if I can get new controller working with the CCC...

5a) I also read a thread where advice was to keep the VO as was with the CCC - for me #0906 - edit the CAS (only) to reflect #0909 - but NOT to proceed with an FA_Write into CAS and LMA. This worked for the poster to allow edits to the actual modules in the car and not the default (some phantom) that are shown when FA_Write is done to CAS and LMA for a later build date date of #0909, The explanation went on that any time you wanted to update the CIC later, one would have to make this edit again (each time).

So, after I do (revert to, temporarily) the CCC stuff, I may try that trick next...

5b) If 5a does not work, go for the full FA_Write and default coding after step 4 is confirmed to work... If controller still not recognized, I may need to replace it.

If I get things going - others have provided CIC Coding to Disable iDrive Disclaimer:

More to follow!

For your old iDrive controller (ZBE HIGH) to work with CIC you need to dumb it down (convert to ZBE LOW). Program it with ZbNr 6941801. Reason: CIC does not support haptic feedback found in ZBE High.

I thought he was trying to get the new, CIC style controller working? I could be wrong though.

You are both correct!

My eBay "new" controller was returned for full refund. I have another coming tomorrow. In the meantime I wanted to get the original one to work so I could explore all menus, see why nav is grayed out, etc... Suspect this to be a virgin CIC (exchange unit from dealer) with no VIN and no FSC's in it. I used Tool32 to C_FG_Lesen on CICR.PRG. I got a "90..." and no VIN. I tried to "Schreiben" with my VIN plus check digit as seen when I run NCS (18 digits), unit still works (I didn't brick it) but nav still gray - and my emulator is in place... Does it matter if I do this stuff with it in or out? I kept it out for all that fun...

Just seeing dbond post his advice, I was literally about to go out to car and try "dumbing down" my CIC "high" controller and report in. Still will...

When I get new controller, I just run Winkfp again, and see if it is (or do so) flashed up to the preferred #9185636?

How in Hell do I get FSC's (any - using emulator, yes?) into my car assuming I got the VIN issue resolved?

Thumbs up Yes!

dbond - you are awesome! There were just 2 numbers to choose from under ZBEH60. It had been at 6963051 and based on your advice, I just flashed it down to the other choice, 6941801.

The old iDrive controller now works - and it retained its haptic feedback. I can now use everything in the car... Nav is still grayed out - and the CIC panel does not light up...it did before. I suspect a bad connection in the PnP emulator harness - perhaps even to pin #14? I'll check it out...

So, I have a remote coding appt with B-R for next Tuesday to get the CIC up and running with a VIN in it... They will want more dough - and for me to hook up to an ICOM A+B+C - if I desire to import FSC codes into my CIC. If I go through all that, why use an emulator at all? Can't I just use a different VIN and matching (or even my VIN with a set of not matching FSC's for nav and voice - does it matter?) set of FSC's so my emulator can take over? It's already bought and shipped to me from Germany... Then I would need US maps and yet another FSC code to activate them...correct?

Such fun - and thanks for getting my current rig to function fully... I love all those menus in there... Can't wait to see the 3D nav though....

Depends how they are doing it--who is doing it? If they are installing real BMW FSC nav FSC codes specific to your VIN, then yes, no reason for an emulator. However, I THINK there is a much cheaper way of doing it where they install the FSC for another VIN (that they probably grabbed off another CIC somewhere along the way). That way there is no real cost for the code, just the cost to install it (and the expertise of knowing how the heck to do that without frying anything)

Who is doing the coding/FSC install??

When you try to update the maps it will ask for a code before it will begin the installation, that is the other FSC code you will need. For that one, you can get them online for $20-50. ~$100 for an unlimited lifetime code to update as many times as you want in the future.

Where are you located? I was going to say you could use my ICOM if you need it if you're near by

I am in central KY, about halfway between Louisville and Nashville...off of I65. If you are willing to trust me I am good for the shipping expenses both ways if you mean it...? Would I need any more software that what we have talked about on these posts...? It's Bimmer-Retroft who actually offer the remote coding service alone for cases like mine where I sourced everything myself (well, w your help of course!).

I was trolling around my menus and I saw a number "9126534" come up as a reference for me to use in calling BMWAssist to turn on my service... Before it always had the last 7 of my VIN... Hmmmm - a VIN or a TCUM part/ZUSB #...? I gotta go buy some plumbing stuff right now (taking the Bimmer - a suitable parts chaser...) but I will check my saved UIF's later and see....

I'm not sure exactly how bimmer-retrofit does it--you can use an ICOM with INPA/NCS/Winkfp and you can use it with BMW's ISTA software, so I'm not sure which one they would need. Can you find out?

If they are using INPA/NCS/Winkfp then you wouldn't need anything else (well, you'd actually need another program, I believe it was called iTools, but I'm sure they can send you that if that's the only roadblock). If they wanted to use ISTA then yeah, would need a lot more software

Let me know which they are going to be using or what they would need software wise. I am open to lending it out, at worst if you paypal'd me what I could replace the unit for, then I'd just refund it once it came back. If I traveled that way more I'd just bring it with me but I'm more down south

Remote Control...

Just thought this through a bit more... Likely they don't care what software is resident on MY computer - beyond the remote connection stuff they link you to for download and install before the session - it's the physical connection between running laptop and the car... Makes sense, but I plan to email them today after I get the new controller. I am heading to my PO Box in a few.

This is a small town, I live 700 yards from the PO, yet they don't deliver mail to houses that close... No worries, the Postmaster is cool and he even holds on to mis-delivered UPS or FedEx packages. Plus - trvia here - UPS often subcontracts out their delivery to the USPS - rural areas. smaller packages? So you get a label that shows UPS starting it and USPS getting it - to my PO Box...

I will install the new controller, default KOMBI to clear out the empty Service menu items (or is there a better way?) in the CIC, then use INPA to run a new UIF, Ident, Vehicle Info, etc. set of screens. I will send those to Vlad and ask what else he sees needing to do to get the CIC fully up - then we can focus on the FSC issues... I'll even delay the session if needed so I can have an ICOM rigged up to do it... I already noticed that with my Dension the default CIC/CID display setting have a tab for "album" but the field is not populated. There are a few settings in CIC that I may try to enable, one at a time, to see if I can get this in there. If so, I may not even need the ComBox/6FL. Especially since reading on B-R's website that 6NR - the real point of combox for us, yes? - does not work with iPhone 5... Really?

Yeah, I would think that they're going to give you something to download but just check and make sure. If the ICOM is the only thing holding this whole retrofit up we'll try to work something out that makes it cheap for you

Also, I'd love to get an idea of how they actually install the FSC code

I can program your CIC and load necessary software/bits if you ever got stuck just PM me. You will need to ship it to me. We can work on your CIC together via a video conference call. BTW, I used to live in Louisville until 2 weeks ago.

See Schpenxel's post, page 9 for my description of how Vlad at BimmerRetrofit got me sorted - even loaded FSC's in using my USB cable remotely...

Finally got a Controller to Work

I put up more details in that other thread, but I wanted those searching under the 6ers forum to see this part also. Here is my first attempt to fit a 2-D object (the 999 cover that everyone uses) into a 3-D hole. You can see the relative widths of my OEM vs. the new. Even worse, the OEM is widest at a different point than the new. For now I cut some edges off of my OEM switch cover and slid them in to fill in the air gaps in my console. Not perfect, but it is secure and works great. I came up with a range of other plastic parts (from a 5er and I think a base from a 3 series - was snapped on my latest controller) thinking that I may be able to shape something that looks tidier. The custom car stereo crowd loves this step of the process and I have done some nice installs myself...

The 6er begs for a top-notch "sano" install and some folks cut more out of their console to allow the entire cover to rest down in the opening with uniform trimming around that. Then they have the console recovered - black leather...

For me, I wanted to try (for this first fitting anyway) to get the switch plate to flush mount. Perhaps if I heated it up, it might bend enough to take up some more contour? Too bad we don't have a choice that provides a wider band around the edges.

Apparently, I only get to attach one photo per reply, so here is a shot of several variants besdies the ...999 switch cover that we typically use for our 6ers... Maybe I can make it a bit smoother without any more console cutting - or new leather... Of course, I don't have extended leather, so this could be a good excuse to go that route...and maybe some Chateau Red Leather accents...!
