Smile JB4: Plug + Play = Smile!!!

I use to own a 2007 335xi and never realized how much I loved that car until I bought a G37X. I came across a 2008 335xi sitting on an Audi lot at a ridiculous price. (33K miles, Sports Package, Premium Package, Winter Package, 18" rims and the discontinued Sparkling Graphite Metallic) Needless to say I immediately purchased the car.

After a week of research, and some trepidation, I purchased the JB4. I looked at the obvious flash upgrades and many other tunes. I choose the JB4.

Woohoo!!!! I'm so happy with how easy it was to achieve such a high level of satisfaction. I was worried this may be too much, but no way. Hit the gas and fly. Almost no turbo lag and the higher gears just keep pulling and begging for more!. My wife, who has owned many BMW's, took it out and came back ecstatic. Here is her comment: "I hit the on ramp at 90 and felt the wind on my butt all the way to 120. Everything felt so comfortable and controllable and the power just kept coming!"

Much thanks to Mike and John at Import Motors in Schaumburg, IL (Northwest Suburb of Chicago) who installed this for me and ran the USB through the glove box. These guys also inspected the car and updated all of my software. I can't say enough about the guys at Import Motors.

If you are questioning the JB4.... don't. Berger Motorsports has this product dialed in!

Johnny

Johnny, did they connect the MAP sensor or leave it disconnected? Does it have a "whoosh" sound the first 10-15 seconds on cold startup? Thanks, ML

I've been debating between the JB4 and the Cobb for my 335is. How much did they charge for the install ?

Why pay? It's a low tech job, a few bolts & plastic parts.

It is good to know your ride....

Good point. I just didn't want to screw up the install is all. I've been on the fence between the JB4 and Cobb but it seems that people with the JB4 are super happy with the "upgrade". I'm gonna give it a shot!

There were a few questions here so I'll just reply in one post.

1. The Woosh sound... no... that is as a result of the duel air intakes that BMS sells. I stuck with the stock intake and will upgrade the filter for now.
2. MAP sensor... not sure. I read the install instructions a few times and didn't see this at all. I know there are a few sensors you remove to remove the to get the ECU.
3. JB4 vs. Cobb.... I looked at this as well. I wanted the "on the fly" selectable menus such as map selection, valet mode, stock mode, and canflap options. Also, I'll be adding mods as I go and I like the option of the learning map.
4. Why didn't I do a "low tech install"? I read everything on this install and know what it takes. It was a $$$/min. decision. I had work to do so I let Import Motors do what they do best. While they were working on my car I was working on closing a deal that will pay for my next mod. And, Import Motors did a nice job routing my USB which was through the hole on the case under the inner box and dividers. Here is the thread I got instruction from .... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...usb+data+cable

Well... glad to be back part of the bimmer community! I absolutely love the JB4 and can't speak more highly of such a modestly priced tune.

Johnny

So the JB4 allows you to use idrive to control the tune or maps and other options? I am thinking about this myself. Does it still retain the factory drivability as in no rough idle, still relatively the same MPG, and reliable for the long haul?

JB4, unlike nearly all other tunes, allows you to change maps from stock to Meth with couple of steering wheel button presses. While you're driving. At any speed.

I seem to remember Procede has that too, but they've almost disappeared! Guessing the grass was greener elsewhere, but personally I miss Shiv's competition - was doing good things, but would not meet JB4's price point.

With JB4 USB cable routed through the firewall, can position a laptop on the passenger seat for realtime readout of parameters, including graphs. With the leptop, you have a commanding view of options that can be changed with a few mouse clicks.

It Is Good....

Oh yes - there is no rough idle and drivability is enhanced. Zero turbo lag - largely a myth with N54 anyway as the turbo's always on boost. The issue there is foot placement - go pedal's best controlled with foot/shoe totally flat on the pedal. Sa-mooth, powerful launch if you press with foot and leg as one.

The stock map on the JB4 runs perfect. No rough idle. For the controls you use the steering wheel buttons. It's pretty slick. There is a video demonstration on the BMS website.

Once again, this is an amazing tune. It's so nice to own a car where I can play with it a bit. I'm hoping to get out the Raceway in Joliet IL and get my car on the track after I can get some required mods. I'm learning as I go, but this JB4 tune and first mod for my 335!

Fuel economy is dependent on your right foot. Normal DD will not materially change MPG. When you get into it the JB4 creates more power so it uses more fuel. With a lot of use can drop to 17-18mpg
